Last night, the Big Fiddle and City Hall were glowing in red to mark the first national "211 Day". This year, for the first time, anyone living anywhere in Canada can pick up the phone and dial 2-1-1 to reach a Service Navigator for information on community-based health, social and government services in or near their community. The service is free, confidential, 24/7 in most of Canada and available in more than 150 languages. Learn more: https://www.unitedway.ca//an-inaugural-pan-canadian-211-d/

Although the holidays will look very different in many parts of the community, the Cape Breton Regional Municipality is calling on all residents to help spread cheer with their ALL IS BRIGHT campaign. Residents are able to plot their individual holiday displays on the All is Bright map, located at www.AllisBrightCBRM.ca, with friends and neighbours then being able to plan a drive to see the many wonderful displays throughout the community. Ten random entries will be chosen to... win gift cards from locally owned businesses, with the best displays going to a public vote for the All is Bright grand prize. With people unable to gather safely at parades and light ups this year, we want to encourage our residents to spread the holiday cheer, says CBRM Recreation Program Coordinator Joe Costello. It is a time honoured tradition for many to go out and look at the displays in our community, and we want to help people plan their trip this season. Entries will be taken through Tuesday, December 15, with the best entries posted to the Cape Breton Regional Municipality Facebook page (@cbrmgov) for votes the following day. Prizes will be awarded on Monday, December 21.
This time of year is about hope, peace, and community! No matter where you are or what you are celebrating, we hope #AllisBright with you and yours this holiday season We want to thank the Sketchline Design team for brightening our spirits with this display (located at the Civic Center, Sydney Waterfront) #AllIsBrightCBRM #happyholidays

Through partnership with the Cape Breton Regional Municipality, Ally Centre of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia Health and the Cape Breton Regional Police Service, 10 new sharps disposal kiosks are being installed across the Municipality as part of an overall harm reduction strategy for a safe and healthy community. These boxes, reduce potential safety risks to people who come in contact with publicly discarded needles and creates more safe disposal options for the people who use needles, whether as a result of substance use or medical conditions, helping to reduce the stigma around substance use in the community.

It’s one of our favourite days of the year! It looks a little different, but we found a way to make Shop of the Class a reality for 2020; officers are shopping ...with students virtually, taking them along to stores in the Mayflower Mall live from their schools with Google Meets. And this year, we get to spread the cheer over 2 days; half of the teams will shop today, and the second half tomorrow. Thank you to the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education and the Mayflower Mall for helping us coordinate this very important day for so many deserving kids. If you’ve never heard us talk about Shop of the Class, it’s an annual event we host with the CBVRCE, Mayflower Mall and many generous community sponsors, to help deserving Cape Breton children who are chosen to participate by their schools fulfill their Christmas wish lists. We’ll be sharing photos and video tomorrow stay tuned!
