Congratulations to Integrative Biology Associate Professor Amy Newman for receiving the 2020 Weston Family Research Innovation Award! This award is presented annually to researchers who demonstrate excellence and innovation in scientific research on ecosystem services produced on farmland for the broader public good. Newman has spent the last decade investigating the impact of changes in the natural world and how those changes put stress on the physiology and behaviour of l...iving creatures. New in #UofGCBS Research: This is Your Brain (Waves) on Drugs Clinical depression is among the world’s most prevalent mental disorders, but up to one third of patients do not respond to available antidepressants. New types of drugs to help treat these patients are urgently needed, and a promising new candidate is a club drug known as ketamine. Researchers in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology are using brain circuit function - aka 'brain waves' to better underst...and how ketamine helps treat depression. They have found that the drug helps normalize a certain type of brain wave measure which can be altered in people with depression. Excitingly, the team's work suggests that that brainwave patterns could serve as a biomarker to help identify drugs that may be effective against treatment resistant depression. #depression #neuroscience #brainwaves #UofG_MCB Read the full story below.

New in #UofGCBS Research: Ribosome Royale: A Specialized Secret Agent in the Fight to Detect Cancer Ribosomes play a critical role in a cell's machinery, manufacturing proteins essential to normal function. Now, researchers in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology have identified another potentially life-saving role for ribosomes: as a tool to detect cancerous tumours. It turns out that cancer can indirectly cause changes to the make up of ribosomes, and these changes may serve as an early warning sign of a tumour that is about to become malignant and resistant to treatment. #ribosomes #cancer #UofG_MCB Read the full story below.

New in #UofGCBS Research: Caring for Caribou: Understanding How Logging Affects Survival of a Threatened Species Woodland caribou are an iconic but threatened species in Ontario, and successful conservation of these majestic animals requires a thorough understanding of how they impacted are human disturbance. Working with a team of government scientists, researchers in the Department of Integrative Biology fitted 122 caribou with GPS trackers and video cameras to track car...ibou movement and survival in both logged and unlogged environments. The team found that caribou populations located in areas with a history of commercial forestry have lower annual growth rates than those in undisturbed areas, and the difference is heavily linked to changes in wolf density. The model promises to serve as a valuable tool in developing more sustainable caribou management policies. #woodlandcaribou #northernontario #forestry #UofG_IB Read the full story below.

New in #UofGCBS Research: Help Me Genome, You’re My Only Hope: A Fishy Resistance Story Infectious salmon anaemia (ISA) is viral disease with the power to devastate salmon farms. The disease nearly shut down Chile's salmon industry in 2007, while outbreaks have also occurred in salmon farms in New Brunswick and other Maritime provinces. To better arm fish farmers in the fight against ISA, researchers in the Department of Integrative Biology have dug into the salmon genome to try to identify sources of natural genetic resistance. The team found multiple genetic variations that were linked to a fish's ability to survive infection. By using these variations as DNA markers, salmon breeding programs now have a tool to help them produce fish with natural resistance to the virus. #ISA #aquaculture #salmon #whatsfordinner #UofG_IB
