Quiet contemplation of a work of art is a deeply fulfilling thing. The installation of Will Gill's work, 'From the Lion's Den' - at The Convent in Sydney's north end - was particularly beautiful to experience. In the quiet surroundings of one of the city's oldest neighborhoods, lined with grand old trees, Will's haunting images of migratory figures photographed at Fogo Island seemed to radiate from the glow of The Convent's lantern (a glass-enclosed staircase). I was especial...ly pleased with the transformation of the images by the space and lighting which offered a dramatic and unusual rendering of the images - almost ghost-like... emphasizing the highlighted figures and boats in the images. I'm eager to see a very different rendering of the images in Middle River. Unfortunately, Hurricane Teddy has forced a cancellation of that projection tonight but I'm hoping that we can set up a rain-date in the coming days. Update to follow. Greg Davies (CBU Curator) Special thanks to Corey Katz for the installation images. CBU Students' Union Cape Breton University @

Today is National Indigenous Peoples Day. To truly honour and respect those recognized on this occasion, we must do well as Canadians to listen to the voices of Indigenous peoples across Turtle Island. Let us unite in listening to the truth and answer the call, as allies, to act and end injustice. From 2018 - 2019; Teresa Marshall, 'Red Rising Hoods' (installation photo).

The final work in our current online exhibition, 'To Be Frank', is this untitled image by Chad Tobin. It is positioned on the reverse side of the title wall where Robert Frank's, 'Car Accident, U.S. 66 between Winslow and Flagstaff, Arizona' (see previous post) is located. Tobin's image is one of last taken by the photographer on his final visit with Robert and June at their home in Mabou in August of 2019. In many ways it is a fitting work with which to close the exhibition,... drawing attention as it does to Robert's presence and absence in the same moment. Here Robert is signified by the bathrobe picked out from shadows by the light streaming through a nearby window. Not unlike Robert's photograph on the title wall, this closing image was taken quite spontaneously as the subject presented itself to Tobin's eye; an instant captured in a fraction of a second and frozen in time. Hello artists in Unama'ki / Cape Breton. Be sure to check out these employment opportunities with the Cape Breton Partnership. Details and application procedures in link below. Deadline 5:00 pm., June 21st.

The first image featured in our current exhibition, 'To Be Frank', is this photograph by Robert from ca. 1955-56. 'Car Accident, U.S. 66 between Winslow and Flagstaff, Arizona' is a black & white silver gelatin print produced as part of Robert Frank's series, 'The Americans', first published as a book in 1958 (France) followed by a second, American publication in 1959. Why was this selected as the first image for the exhibition, you may ask? More than once in the years follow...ing the publication of his series, Robert referred to this photograph as one of his favourite images. It seemed fitting to include it on the title wall, in part, for this very reason. However, it is also an image that succinctly addresses life and death; like the photograph itself which captures the living moment in a single frame, embalming it at the very same instant. In our next post, we'll look at the closing exhibition image by Chad Tobin and explore its particular connection to this photograph.
