When I was a kid every backyard had a garden. Every backyard. People grew their own food. Planting gardens was just what people did back then. Its what Cicansky has always done. But even since the 1960s, he has recognized a radicalness to the act. For some reason, people dont want to talk about climate change. And I contend that as an individual you have to do something. And for me its gardening, says Cicansky.... And if millions of people started to garden, dig up their lawns things begin to change. Excerpt from Regina Leader-Post. As we head into the final weekend of 'The Debbie Show: Views from the Desk,' we'd like to congratulate Jill McRae and Andrew Cairns, the curators who worked with Receptionist Debbie Muttart to choose her favourite works from the Gallery's permanent collection. We heard from the co-curators in an interview with CBC Prince Edward Island earlier this year: McRae says the idea for The Debbie Show came up during a weekly meeting when staff talked about how they enjoy working in th...e gallery because they get to overhear Muttart's enthusiastic interactions with gallery patrons. "I very much agree with Debbie's taste, so the pieces that she's chosen I love," said McRae. "We have a good collection of sort of older pieces, as well as some new stuff that we haven't shown before," she said, noting Muttart went down into the centre's art vault, something she doesn't normally get to do. Co-curator Cairns helped bring Muttart's choices together in cohesive groupings. "She's got a real eye for colour," Cairns said. "A lot of the pieces, they're different but they still have a 'Debbie' touch as she was saying, she really loves nature and animals." Muttart emphasized to the curators that she wanted the show to be welcoming. "I feel the pieces really reflect that make you feel good in the gallery!" Cairns said. On now in the CCAG: Artists by Artists If a portrait is a record of its subject, it also reveals something of its makers relationship to the person portrayed and the social world they share, remarks Curator Pan Wendt. Portraits of artists show us how artists define the singularity of their role, whether they are self-portraits that function as self-presentation, or images of other artists that record the identifications, rivalries, and intimacies between peers. Victor Cicansky on the origin of his ceramic preserves : "I first appreciated the gem-like beauty of preserve jars as a young boy when I watched Bunica and my mom working to fill them. The image of jars of preserves impressed itself on my young imagination. Many years later, when we were living and gardening in Craven, I remember my wife, Fran, busily preserving the bounty from our Craven garden. My imagination was reignited by her beautiful preserves: jars of sliced... beets, carrots, cucumber pickles, tomatoes, jars of giardiniera, tri-colour bush beans, and salsas. I picked up a jar quart of mixed pickles, held it up and said, "This is beautiful. I should make something like this in clay." Fran responded, "Why dont you!"" - Victor Cicansky, The Pantry Shelf.
