BCs vaccination order of priority is out and it’s fantastic that child care workers were NOT left out! https://www2.gov.bc.ca//covid-19-provincial-suppo/vaccines
Open letter to Premier Horgan and Minister Chen, sent today. https://docs.google.com//1jmEVghUiFmMkihqU043RAe8pMe/edit
So...ACCB increased for all ages to be implemented starting during the COVID pandemic, and a provincial waitlist. Still no full childcare plan (or platform overall)... https://www.facebook.com/watch/live/?v=687543035193956&ref=watch_permalink
Universal Child Care shouldn't be created in BC before the current child care crisis is addressed: you can't build a house without a strong foundation, and strong public programs are no different. But the system exists today to immediately expand ACCB so families get instant access to lower fees - if only the government funded it. The system exists today to immediately pay a living wage to all BC child care professionals - if only the government funded it. ... And the system exists today to remove tuition fees up front rather than provide after-the-fact tuition bursaries - reducing barriers to students wanting to enter the child care sector. It's naive to believe that a Universal Child Care System in BC will suddenly address the systemic failures in BC child care when the government isn't willing to address those failures now. With a BC Election rapidly approaching, we hope all political parties consider what BC children need today - a quality child care system - and act to improve quality in BC child care. Because there is a lot that can be done immediately to improve quality for today's children.
