Cancer can change everything, but it doesn’t have to define who you are. Because life is bigger than your diagnosis. Bigger than chemo. Bigger than the scars. Life is about who you’re with and celebrating every moment we share with those we love. It’s about memories that live on, even if the ones we love are no longer with us. Life is bigger than cancer.

Immunotherapy research update: Cancer-killing viruses supercharge immunotherapy A CCS-funded study has shown pairing cancer-killing viruses with a type of immunotherapy can eliminate tumours and spark a long-term immune system response. In adoptive T-cell therapy (ACT), a person’s immune cells are taken out and modified to specifically target their cancer and then given back to them as a treatment. While ACT has been successful in some cancers, it remains ineffective against... the majority of common solid tumours. With the support of a CCS Innovation Grant, Dr Yonghong Wan and his team showed that combining cancer-killing viruses with ACT significantly increased the immunotherapy’s effectiveness. The specially designed viruses worked through a push-pull mechanism they pushed the cancer-targeting T-cells to multiply and pulled them into the core of tumour. In animal models, this combination approach eliminated tumours and led to a long-term anti-tumour response from the immune system. Further, these results were achieved without preconditioning, a toxic process that patients typically have to undergo before receiving ACT. These findings bring this promising immunotherapy one step closer to being a more effective and safe treatment for more people with cancer. See more

We are committed to change now, and in the future. Systemic racism impacts the people we serve, the research we fund, and the experiences of employees, volun...teers and supporters of the Canadian Cancer Society. There are deep disparities in cancer risk, cancer care and in cancer research, with life and death consequences that cannot be ignored. We acknowledge the experiences of the Black community and we know that positive change requires listening, learning and meaningful action. We have a responsibility to question our approaches and have created a plan for our first steps. This is an important journey that we are committed to not only in this moment of global uprising, but in the future too. You can learn more about what we’re doing, and we welcome your comments on how we can continue to better demonstrate our support for all Canadians and the voices of Black, Indigenous and people of colour: https://bit.ly/3hgqeLz Together, we stand with the Black community. #BlackLivesMatter
