Survey on how the pandemic is affecting young children and their parents: more family time, but increasing challenges Although the pandemic has created some positive changes in several families’ pace of life, it has also created many challenges for parents. Those were among the results of a survey conducted by the Léger firm and made public by the Early Childhood Observatory during Early Childhood Week. 68% of the parents surveyed considered that being a parent is more stres...sful now than before the pandemic. Featured in our newsletter this month: Activities to help get outside, and when it simply is not possible to play outside, bring the outdoors in. Five Senses Fall Scavenger Hunt: Sick of Scavenger Hunts yet? Us neither! We love this one from CBC Parents: https://www.cbc.ca//p/view/printable-autumn-scavenger-hunt Shapes Walk: This is a great way to keep kids engaged on walks to the grocery store, to school, a hike, or simply a visit to the local park, and bonus, squeeze ...in some some math! What geometric shapes (circles, squares, rectangles, triangles etc.) can you find outside? How many of each kind? https://buggyandbuddy.com/math-kids-finding-shapes-playgro/ Mud painting + Mud Kitchen: An easy way to paint outdoors! Grab some empty yogurt tubs, old spoons or other unused kitchen utensils, paintbrushes, and paper (or leftover cardboard boxes). Scoop up some mud and use it as paint. Even if it hasn’t rained, you can add some water to the dirt to get the same effect. If your kiddo is sensitive to textures, gloves can help them feel more at ease. This may end up turning into a mud kitchen, another fun, free outdoor activity! https://thimbleandtwig.com/mud-kitchen-play-ideas-for-kids/ Magic Potions: Halloween may be over but the magic lives on. We love this idea from Run Wild My Child: Give each kid a jar and let them collect their items. Once they have all their ingredients, add about a cup full of vinegar, a squirt of dish soap and a few drops of food colouring. Swirl everything around. Then top with a spoonful of baking soda to get the potion brewing and bubbling! Make sure to do all this outside, because it does get messy! https://runwildmychild.com/fall-outdoor-activities-for-kids/ If it is simply too cold for an outdoor adventure, check out this list of ways to bring the outdoors inside: https://lovevery.com//outdoor-activities-you-can-bring-in/ To read the full newsletter: https://mailchi.mp//supporting-families-during-the-covid-1 Don't miss our free workshop for parents on winter outdoor play: gearing up for the outdoors, activity ideas, safety, and sharing resources. https://bit.ly/LetsPlayOutsideWorkshop
