Cedar Hedge Farm 01.02.2021

COVID has changed our lives but it won’t stop us from growing your food. With the start of 2021 and a new lockdown we can’t predict what will happen with the farmers’ markets but we can make sure we do our part, to make local food available to the community. With that in mind we will be adding a few spaces to our box/delivery program. ... If all goes well and things start to get back to normal you will be able to pick up at the local markets. If thing are slowed down, then we will find a way to safely get your produce to you at no extra charge.

Supporting local is so important. If you follow them on FB or IG you'll know that Suntree has spent the last year walking the walk: Thanks Suntree for supporting local producers and businesses like mine. Check out this great store in the heart of Port Hope.

Gift Certificates in Support of the Greenhouse Renovations Full transparency: gift certificates are a way for me to acquire funds now to do the necessary greenhouse work. But as I have said, I don’t like asking for help and I definitely don’t want to take advantage. ... That is why we don’t have a Go Fund Me page; we are not asking for donations. I figure if you can provide some funds now, I can provide veg during the market season. It really is that simple and it would really help. For complete details and information on how to purchase, visit www.cedarhedgefarm.ca/stuff.php

In Support of the Greenhouse Renovations Back in 2013 the little greenhouse took shape. Our greenhouse has been great - not that I wouldn’t change things if I was starting over - it has done what I asked/needed it to do and more. With a lot of thought and more trial and error the space has been optimized. In the spring of 2020 we put over 3000 plants through our little 600 square foot greenhouse. With that said, with the erratic spring weather the space needs: 1. to be large...r 2. to be more adjustable. Larger means an extension, adjustable means more venting, more heating and more power. Larger is a bit costly but because I built the first one, I understand the steps. Adjustable will be possibly more costly and has pitfalls, as solar power and heating will need more research. I have had a few people ask me why I don’t set up a Go Fund Me page. Simply I really don’t like asking for help and I definitely think if you’re going to give to a cause there are people in more need. Over the next few days to a week I will let you know how we can help each other, me with the greenhouse and you with fresh, clean, locally grown food. The first option is to pre-order your spring seedlings - check out our 2021 preview at www.cedarhedgefarm.ca Stay safe Farmer Chris

Today we just launched our 2021 preview seedling catalogue. These are (will be) live plants that will be available* in May from our off-the-grid greenhouse. We are accepting pre-orders so that you are sure to get what you want. You will also get first access to the final catalogue with the entire list of what we will have. We are currently sourcing seed for new varieties - if there is an heirloom/open pollinated plant you are looking for let us know and we will see what we ...can do. Download at www.cedarhedgefarm.ca * there is always the chance of seed failure or other issues - we will do our best to make sure everything is available.

Water Wagon update. Thanks to Warkworth Farm Supply and Brighton Tire and we're back to watering. Add to that a DIY pump rack and a test drip hose and we are making progress.

Cedar Hedge Farm 18.09.2020

Watering up date. Still no rain. On the weekend we had 4000 gallons of water delivered. 500 when into our water wagon to get it closer to the crops to make watering easier. Seems the weight was to much for the old tires. One popped and the other well it my as well have the side wall split. Off to Brighten in the morning to get new tires and I thought paying for water was a pain...

Pool/water reservoir filled. Fava Bean getting close. Rain or watering can probably the latter. Looking for old unwanted garden hoses as we attempt to build a gravity feed watering system. Off grid farming is an adventure in adaptation.

Many favourites Box Car Willie, Snow White a couple reclaimed Garden Peach (the fuzzy one), Black Cherry and one that we could no longer get the seed for so we dug a few seeds up in the spring of 2019 so we can make this great tiny cherry available for 2020.
