No food goes to waste at the farm! Left over celery and tomatoes and any other vegetables are an appreciated snack by the animals!
Give the gift of local this year. Ontario's farmers, restaurants and businesses have been working hard to maintain the best our province has to offer. Look for the Foodland logo next time you shop! https://www.ontario.ca/foodland/page/finding-local
Even an hundred years later, this is still as good advice now, as it was back then.
Advice from An Old Farmer Your fences need to be horse-high, pig-tight and bull-strong. Keep skunks and bankers at a distance.... Life is simpler when you plow around the stump. A bumble bee is considerably faster than a John Deere tractor. Words that soak into your ears are whispered not yelled. Meanness don’t jes’ happen overnight. Forgive your enemies; it messes up their heads. Do not corner something that you know is meaner than you. It don’t take a very big person to carry a grudge. You cannot unsay a cruel word. Every path has a few puddles. When you wallow with pigs, expect to get dirty. The best sermons are lived, not preached. Most of the stuff people worry about ain’t never gonna happen anyway. Don’t judge folks by their relatives. Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer. Live a good, honorable life Then when you get older and think back, you’ll enjoy it a second time. Don’t interfere with somethin’ that ain’t bothering you none. Timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a Rain dance. If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop diggin’. Sometimes you get, and sometimes you get got. The biggest troublemaker you’ll probably ever have to deal with, watches you from the mirror every mornin’. Always drink upstream from the herd. Good judgment comes from experience, and a lotta that comes from bad judgment. Lettin’ the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier than puttin’ it back in. If you get to thinkin’ you’re a person of some influence, try orderin’ somebody else’s dog around.. Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Leave the rest to God. Don’t pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, he’ll just kill you. Most times, it just gets down to common sense. Author unknown
November 24th, 2020! It’s been a helluva year so far to say the least! We’ve embarked on our latest milestone and endeavor, re-clearing the old fields! Over the years, with the fields not being worked, the red cedars took over, thus the farm name was born, Cedar Patch Farms!... Of the 172 acres we have, there is approximately 20 acres cleared, and 120 acres over grown. We have started the land reclamation process to increase our available acreage to plant more hay fields and crops! It will take years, however the process has been started, and can’t wait to see where we will be a year from now!
A milestone for Cedar Patch Farms begins tomorrow! Can’t wait! Details and pictures to follow!A milestone for Cedar Patch Farms begins tomorrow! Can’t wait! Details and pictures to follow!
Foggy warm November morning.
When we jumped in with both feet into farming, we were fortunate enough to have met our mentor, Harry Stirk. One of the many things he taught us, is that if you take from the land (hay, crops, etc) you have to give back to the land (manure, fertilizer, etc). You can’t always take, and not give back, as eventually there will be nothing the land can give.... We have spent the last couple of weeks spreading manure on our open fields. While a mentor teaches you a lot, there will always be a lesson learned from your mistakes. Today’s mistake is spreading manure with high winds behind you! The manure spreader tool bar at the back spins towards the operator, and well, unlike peeing with the wind at your back, you definitely want to spread manure into the wind, cause you may just not like the results of spreading manure with the wind at your back!
Happy Hallowe’en everyone! Hope everyone enjoyed their pumpkins from the farm, we look forward to seeing everyone again next year for watermelons and pumpkins! Have a safe and happy Hallowe’en and don’t eat too much candy tonight! Save some for tomorrow!
Let us Remember.
Happy Thanksgiving to all of our friends and family, far and wide and beyond!
