I swear I always love my kids a little bit extra when I get home from a long birth. Maybe it's because I'm still on an oxytocin high from the new family who welcomed their baby. Maybe I'm refreshed from not hearing "Mom! Mom!" for a day. Maybe I'm feeling an extra level of connection, because I love my job so much and it fills me up. Do you choose a word to be your touchstone through the year? A word you can return to when you're feeling down, lost, overwhelmed, listless... For 2021, that word for me is 'connection'. I want to nurture connection in my life. Connection to myself- my mind, my body, my heart and my spirit.... Connection with my kids and my man. Connection with nature. Connection with friends, people I miss being with in person. Connection with Spirit. Connection to my purpose and my goals. Connection with each client/family I support. And connection with nature again. There are so many moments when it's easy to lose connection. I get stuck in my mind, going in circles of self-doubt, loneliness, and -most common of all- listing off all of the things I "should" be doing with my time. Screw that! This year, I'm going to do my best to bring myself back to connection in those moments. Let me know if you have a word for this year! Cosleeping/bedsharing. It can be a hot topic. Should you? Shouldn't you? What do the professionals say? What does your intuition say? What works for your baby and your family? Infant humans want to be near you. They like to feel your warmth, smell your familiar smell, hear your breath and your heartbeat. And you want to get sleep when you can.... Bedsharing can be a great way to meet everyone's needs, if it's done safely. (No smoking or alcohol, firm mattress, light blankets, baby on their back, no extra pillows. See La Leche League International's website for details.) I barely remember these years, when I had two babies in under 2 years. When people ask my opinion about bedsharing, I tell them it worked well for me and my babies. We accept that nature is in a constant state of transformation, with new life and death and rebirth happening daily. We see and allow the unfolding, not trying to fix or change it. What if we viewed ourselves in the same way? What if we recognized that we go through phases of transformation, shedding what's no longer needed, leaving space for new growth? What if we allowed the shedding without resistance? What if we viewed pregnancy and birth in this way? What if we understoo...d that there's no need to fix or change anything, or to stop the transformation from unfolding? What if we held space for people to flourish in their transformation? Prairie dog says, "Be still and listen". He has his ears open, hands hanging idle. Even his whiskers seem to be listening, picking up on vibrations. Many of us are afraid to be still, to slow down. We don't want to be seen as 'idle' or 'unproductive'. We've been taught to believe that action and busy-ness and doing are better than stillness and rest, and simply being. Some of us are afraid of what we will hear if we slow down and listen. Will old feelings bubble up, ones we f...orgot we had stuffed away? Will we hear gentle whispers reminding us if we're not on track with our true purpose in this life? Will we hear our heart yearning for what it's not getting? Will we find truths we've been avoiding? Maybe. This is an invitation to find stillness today, if it works for you. Sit or lie down somewhere and just be, for a few minutes or as long as you can swing it. Be with what comes up, and be gentle with yourself.
