Great post of one of my colleagues in the UK about an often overlooked part of the body, but so hugely influential - I would also say that bridle fit, especially the brow band, can have a huge influence on TMJ function.

When it comes to feed my general advice is don’t add anything to the basics of good quality hay, rough unfertilised mixed pasture, salt and different sources of... water, unless you have a problem or the amount of work that is done uses more energy than the basic intake. If you need to add anything try and make sure that is as free as possible of processing and chemicals. If you’re horse is at all footy, then you have something wrong, check your basics before adding anything else, if you have additional feed, then change it. Balancing with vitamin and mineral supplements is not an exact science, there are many different variables that can influence the basics, so you will find that each situation and individual will respond differently. Marketing is extremely good at making you think there is a magic feed out there for every situation. If you’re horse is overweight, supplementation will not make it go away, movement and good basic diet are the first stop. You’re horse is your best guide, look at the overall health, observe movement and don’t add anything unless it is absolutely essential. See more
