There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes! I one hundred percent love and live by the Scandinavian expression ‘friluftsliv’ which literally translates to ‘open-air living’ (thank you @freshairmile) Fresh air can do so much for you. It can improve both your mental and physical health. Don’t believe me, just head outside for 5 or 10min. You can get a completely different perspective as soon as you get OUTSIDE of a building!... Many of you are working from home with a little more flexibility in your day. Which means you can get outside while the sun is out, and then perhaps work a little later after it is dark. Challenge yourself to make this time for yourself. Make time to connect with nature, and BREATHE in some fresh air (and if you are up for an extra challenge try turning your phone off while you do it!).

Taking time to set goals is such an important part of your fitness journey. But the truth is, a goal by itself is like trying to arrive a new destination without a road map to get there. Ultimately the element that will matter the most for you to make a sustainable change, is the SYSTEM/or plan you create to ensure you are making progress. You can want something with every ounce of your being. But, without a system in place it’s very unlikely that the goal you’ve set will ev...er be achieved. Consider these FOUR points when creating your FITNESS SYSTEM: Obvious attach a new daily habit to something you already do on a daily basis. Similar to how you have attached brushing your teeth to getting ready for bed. Make your plan as obvious as you can about how, what or when you will fit it in Attractive start by creating a plan that you will enjoy, such as listening to a great pod cast while you get outside and MOVE. Adding in new habits while doing something you already love will help you stick to it Easy make sure you can wrap your head (and schedule) around it. Start with something you can absolutely commit to. For example, start with 10min per day, you may find yourself doing more, but as long as you get 10min everyday you’ll know you are on the right track Satisfying you need to feel good about what you are doing. My advice is to track your workouts. Nothing beats consistency and discipline. Motivation will get you started; but it’s discipline that keeps you going. So, when you are feeling overwhelmed with big picture goals and fitness plans, narrow it down to one or two small daily tasks that you can consistently focus on to help you get there. Create a plan that allows you to commit to these small habits every day. These small things are what will truly add up to HUGE RESULTS... Habits like putting your workout clothes on the minute you finish work (before you sit on the couch), filling your water bottle every morning while you make your coffee, or cutting up veggies as you are putting the groceries away so that you can do a better job of getting more veggies in each day. Whatever the habit is that you are trying to create, you need to make it into an actionable item. How many of you feel like Fall is a hard time to focus on yourself and your fitness? Well, you are not alone because it IS a busy season, even without COVID19 throwing wrenches at you. So, here are 9 tips to help Stay on Track this FALL: Be Realistic - make sure you are setting goals or adjust your goals so that they are realistic... Work Within your Limits - how much time can you commit to your fitness on top of the family and work obligations you currently have Keep a Schedule - make a plan and put it in your calendar. Date AND time! Mix it Up - your body and brain LOVE variety, don't do the exact same exercises every time you workout Log Your Workouts - this allows you to see progress, or see where you need to step it up Take Photos (or measurements) - you may miss small changes in the mirror, this way you can see the visual changes (big or small) Remember WHY You Started - revisit what motivated you to begin in the first place, and remind yourself WHY that is important to you Have FUN - pump up your music, and remember that exercise is NOT a punishment. Shift your mind set away thinking exercise is something you have to do, into something you GET to do! And, celebrate your body for everything it has allowed you to do (and the things you plan to do) Forgive Yourself - $#!T Happens... you may have weeks that are not your best, this happens. Are you struggling with motivation now that summer is here? YOU ARE NOT ALONE. It’s hard to feel inspired to pick up those weights when the sun is shining, the patio is calling, or because you’re feeling stressed with your return to work after our cities were locked down... My advice is to commit to 15min. Start a timer and start your workout. If at 15min you still aren’t feeling it stop. You can try again tomorrow... Most times, giving yourself permission to not always HAVE IT IN YOU can take some of your stress away, and actually make it EASIER for you to commit to your workouts. You may find that at that 15min mark, you mind set has shifted and you can happily finish your workout. If not, and you pack it up for the day, BUT remember you still got in 15min of exercise. And one of the biggest benefits of working out at home is it can be done any time of day, with NO COMMUTE. But currently my Run Club peeps are doing their workouts on their own instead of together with our group. When life gives you lemons make margaritas I’ve been in a great groove these past few months. On top of my strength training, I’ve been getting outside to run. Enjoying the sun, the fresh air, and its always been my form of moving meditation (either that, or while running is when I have THE BEST conversations with myself, or when I solve ALL the worlds problems!!) However, about a week and a half ago I re-injured my meniscus. And both my Chiropractor and Physiotherapist... have said NO RUNNING! (For now). At first I was pretty bummed as I didn’t want to lose the momentum I was on Lets face it injuries SUCK! Know what else sucks, simply not being able to do what you love or not being able to do the things the way you normally like to. And I know we can all relate right now. Maybe your gym is closed, maybe the classes online aren’t the same as being there in person, maybe you don’t know what to do right now. Rather than sitting there and being upset about what you can’t control, take some control back. This is the time to get CREATIVE! Do not settle and DO NOT give in to boredom. Think back to the activities you loved as a kid. How did you spend your time outside when you were young?? Go back to that! This is me today on my mountain bike after storing it for the past almost 5 years!!! And guess what. I had a blast, AND it was a GREAT workout!
