OK Central NL, the wait is over! A while back I told you there would be exciting news concerning the recycling of plastic bottle caps. Since that post, I have r...eceived MANY great comments about the initiative and that you have started to collect the plastic bottle caps! I am pleased to announce Central NL's first official collection site for the bottle caps. Gander's Green Depot has been a great supporter helping me to get this up an running and today I was excited to place a collection box at their location. As a result, you can bring your bottle caps to their location to be recycled. This is a great day for Central NL, and our planet, as we now have the ability to have one less type of plastic entering our landfills. Please save your caps and drop them off to the Green Depot in Gander. It is my hope to get more collection locations on board in Gander and the rest of Central NL over time as well as having businesses collect these caps such as The "All New" Rosie's Restaurant & Bakery who are collecting the caps from their dinning room. I do ask that you treat the caps as you would recycling and please rince the caps and do not include any trash with the caps. For more information on this initiative and the great company that has started all of this, go to Seaside Reclaimed's FB page and web page to get a sense of what can be achieved when we put our minds to it. This company is making a difference one bottle cap at a time! Please don't hesitate contacting me if you have questions or if you or someone you know can help with getting more collection sites. Great job everyone!

BUSINESS ALERTCOUNTERFEIT $100 BILL CIRCULATION The Chamber has been informed that a number of businesses in Gander have encountered the circulation of $100 CO...UNTERFEIT BILLS. Businesses are urged to pass this alert along to their staff and review procedures in identifying counterfeit bills. Training information can be found at https://www.bankofcanada.ca/banknotes or by contacting Cst. Shawn Dyke of the RCMP, Gander Detachment at 256-6841. The Chamber also has information on hand and would be happy to share with you and your staff. Attached is a brochure from the Bank of Canada on Know Your Canadian Polymar Bank Notes. RCMP are suggesting businesses make their staff aware of the following details: Make staff aware of the feel of a genuine bill, not the counterfeit bill. When passed a counterfeit bill limit the handling of the bill so RCMP may be able to obtain fingerprints. Make staff aware that when the individual is passing a counterfeit bill they take it from one pocket and then put the change they receive back in another pocket. The individuals are driving a black Nissan Pathfinder. Working together to make businesses safe! Hazel See more

19 years ago today, nearly 6700 passengers and airline crew members arrived in Gander, following the closure of the U.S. airspace due to the 9/11 terrorist atta...cks. Residents of Gander and surrounding communities opened their doors to the stranded passengers, dropping everything to host and comfort them until the airspace reopened. Strangers were invited into homes where meals and beds awaited them. Striking school bus drivers put down their picket signs and volunteered to transport people from their planes. Schools became shelters. Restaurants donated food and pharmacies provided everything from diapers to medication. That time together formed tight relationships between the residents and the passengers. The attacks killed 2977 people and injured over 6000 others. Additional people died of 9/11-related cancer and respiratory diseases in the months and years following the attacks. Today, our thoughts are with the families of the victims, the survivors and the first responders who risked their lives so bravely. Today, we remember the lives lost, the friendships made and the strength and kindness shown.

For the first time in the history of the RCMP we will not be able to come together for a regimental funeral for CST. Heidi Stevenson. The National Police Federa...tion is asking Canadians to wear something red on Friday and to pause for two minutes. "Friday, April 24, we are asking all Canadians at 2 o'clock Atlantic time wear something red. Stand in your driveway, stand on your lawn, but do these things. Mourn together as a country. Protect yourselves and ensure you are doing physical distancing, and wear something red to show support for all of the victims."

As you may or may not know, there has been an overwhelming amount of our towns people placing bears or stuffed toys in their windows. This has helped keep spiri...ts up as well as a "hunt" for the toys from children and family in vehicles as well as people walking, as we all try to practice safe social distancing. So, let's keep the momentum going! Every Sunday, there will be a new idea introduced for the week. Feel free to keep the previous weeks idea up as well! Let's continue to support one another!
