Bringing a new meaning to Ragdoll! Oliver the Ragdoll cat & his sister, Luna, were in for their annual exams. While Luna was very prim and proper during her visit, Oliver was quite relaxed once he warmed up to us. He sprawled out with his large body and let us examine him with minimal effort (on his part too! ) This sweet duo had us smiling through the appointment!

In celebration of the piglets to come, we would like to share with you, some fun piggy facts: ... They are actually quite clean animals! Pigs are smart! They have the intelligence of a human toddler and are ranked as the 5th most intelligent animal! They are social creatures, often seen pressed up against their friends while sleeping Pigs have a great sense of direction Mother Pigs will sing to their piglets while they nurse. The piglets learn to recognize their mother from a distance by her sounds Over 20 unique vocal expressions have been identified and range from hunger to calling for friends. Turns out "sweating like a pig" is just a saying. Pigs have barely any sweat glands and usually opt for water or mud to help cool themselves off. Adult pigs can run up to 11 mph, or a 7-minute mile!

Socializing from a Distance Dr. Samyra Stuart-Altman addresses one of the unique adaptions required during a lockdown in her blog post; Pet Socialization in the Age of Social Distancing. "Socialization does not mean your pet must interact with new people and pets directly. It is the introduction of new situations in a positive way, while making them feel safe, and confident.", writes Dr. Stuart-Altman. She includes a list of creative experiments to try with your pets at home!

It's Senior Health Month! Due to improved veterinary care and dietary habits, pets are living longer now than they ever have before. This is wonderful news! One consequence of this is that pets, along with their owners and veterinarians, are faced with a whole new set of age-related conditions. In recent years there has been extensive research on the problems facing older pets and how their owners and veterinarians can best handle their special needs. Our veterinary team ...is trained to assess your pet as they reach their senior years. They can gauge where your pet may need extra support, and this is key! We have come up with some specialized screening and comprehensive diagnostic bundles which give us a comprehensive health screen for senior pets. Bundling these items makes completing these tests more affordable and facilitates getting these important health tests completed. To learn about our bundles and the rest of the special pricing we are offering for the month of November visit https://www.centralvet.ca/senior-pet-month.

A little bit of comfort In this article, a photographer followed the story of two penguins who had been recently "windowed", only to find that they would often comfort each other. We're back with Part of Dr. Kristen Wilson's Fun Backyard Chicken Facts! Certain breeds of chicken can lay over 300 eggs a year Roosters will protect hens from predators... You can typically tell a rooster from a hen by their wattles (under their chin) and comb (on top of their head) size and appearance. Some breeds take longer to become distinguished than others Chickens are smart and playful They can be trained to go outside and free range during the day, and come back to the coop at night for protection Egg shell colour is determined by genetics - certain breeds will lay certain colours The process between egg laying and hatching is called incubation. Most chickens eggs hatch after 21 days Hens may lay eggs for 5 or 6 years, and egg production will start to decrease over time Depending on the breed, meat production chickens will be raised for 8-16 weeks before going for processing

Foreign Bodies Everyone tries their best to avoid these, but they can still happen sometimes. A foreign body is an item that is stuck inside a pet that is not supposed to be there! This is often a non-edible item that was ingested. While some pets seem to have a fairly good sense of what is food and what is not, there are still some that have a tendency to explore the world by eating it. ... When a pet ingests a foreign body, the first thing to clarify is if it is something that can pass through the pet’s body. We recommend that you call your veterinarian to determine this. Some smooth or small items may be able to pass through the pet’s body (with some help perhaps!) without causing damage. However, some items such as those that are larger or sharp, cannot pass safely as they could disrupt or damage the digestive system If the item is not passable, the next step is to determine how it will come out! An X-ray may be required to determine where the item is in the gastrointestinal tract. If the item was recently ingested and has not travelled far in the digestive system, a veterinarian may be able to induce vomiting to encourage the pet to bring up the item. If it is further through the system, a foreign body surgery may be required to remove it. If you see or suspect your pet has ingested a foreign object, call us at 204-275-2038. Pictured below is a chicken bone that was removed from a small dog. Those sharp ends could have caused some trouble trying to pass through her digestive system!

Have you ever considered fostering a pet? How do you know if you’re ready? Many rescues run foster programs for the pets prior to them being adopted. Fostering is a commitment and can come with its own challenges, but it is also incredibly emotionally rewarding. How to tell if you are ready: ... You want to help acclimate an animal to a home and help a family adopt the right pet for them! You’ve been thinking about getting a dog yourself but you’re not sure you’re ready for the lifelong emotional and financial commitment, and you want to get some practice while helping dogs in need. You want to give your current pet some animal companionship. You have space in your home and schedule to accommodate a temporary animal guest and give her the attention she needs. What you are expected to do while fostering a pet: Take the animal to and from vet appointments according to the rescue’s requirements Help to socialize the animal with people and other animals in your environment Introduce the animal to a home environment so they are prepared for adoption Help to train or reinforce manners, housetraining (and optional tricks!) Report milestones & behaviour characteristics to the rescue You may need to talk with potential adopters about the animal & set up meet & greets The rewards of fostering: You help take some space at a rescue and alleviate some pressure from them It can help build on your animal ownership skills You get to feel good inside watching the animal you foster grow into the wonderful pet they can be! Each foster situation is different and can vary with each animal and their own requirements. It’s important to be honest and upfront with a rescue in what your accommodation abilities are so the fostering experience is positive for both you and the animal! For more information on dog fostering preparations, check out this link! https://www.rover.com/blog/dog-fostering-101/ If you think you are ready to foster a pet, contact a local rescue today! When to say goodbye "Despite our best efforts, there will come a time when the medicine, the treatments and the nursing care we can provide will not be enough. We are often asked How will we know it is the right time?" There are several questions to reflect on to help you determine the answer: ... Is my pet painful? Is my pet able to eat enough? Is hydration being managed? Can my pet clean itself? Does my pet seem happy and show interest in his or her environment? Is my pet showing signs of loneliness, anxiety or fear? Can my pet get up and go for a walk without assistance? Another helpful evalution is to mark on a calendar when your pet is having a good day and bad day. When the bad days outnumber the good, it may be time to say goodbye. Why adopting a senior pet is AWESOME! When thinking of animal adoption, many people initially think of young animals. However, we are here to share the cool perks of bringing a senior pet into your life They are often already trained! ... Most senior pets are familiar with bathroom habits and might even know some obedience or cool tricks! No surprises on who they are going to be! You get to know their full size, behaviours, funny quirks and possibly even medical needs. Calmer energy levels! Senior pets' energy levels have evened out so you're able to enjoy calmer walks and less running around after them. More time for cuddles! Less monitoring while they figure things out! They've most likely been there and done that so they usually aren't into getting into things and trouble like a younger pet. You can enjoy spoiling them in their retirement! It can be very rewarding providing a comfortable home life for a senior pet in their golden years. What other PRO's do you notice from loving your senior pet? Check out this great link from the Winnipeg Humane Society for more information on adopting senior pets!

A Sweet Reunion! Sage came into the clinic the other day for her first exam with us since her recent adoption! While reviewing her previous medical records from the Winnipeg Animal Services, we saw a familiar signature! Dr. Samyra Stuart-Altman helps out at Winnipeg Animal Services by examining potentially adoptable pets. We knew that she would be thrilled to see Sage again post-adoption so we had her pop in to say hi! We are thrilled for Sage and her new family!

The Yorkie Whisperer ! Ellie, the Yorkshire Terrier was in the other day and quickly got cozy with her RVT, Callie . The two got in a nice snuggle while Ellie's veterinarian discussed her healthcare plan with her owners. We know it's tough that you are not able to come in with your pets during these times, so we make sure to give them an extra cuddle when they are in.

Look how big those feet are! Growing puppies often sport over-sized looking feet as they grow in all different ways! Have you ever looked at a puppy and wondered, how big will you ACTUALLY get? ... RVT, Carla and handsome Balto are here to share a some fun growing facts with you! While seeing a puppy's parents is usually the best indicator of sizing, this isn't always an option! There are many other factors that play into your dog's final adult size including: The breed of dog. There are some breeds that we know for sure are smaller and some that are larger. Male dogs often mature to a larger size than females If they have been spayed or neutered, the age at which this occurs can slightly affect adult size. Breed size differences in growing: Up until 6 weeks of age, most puppies grow at the same ratio, doubling their birth weight by 1 week of age. They continue gaining approximately 5-10% of their weight on a daily basis. After that you can calculate their approximate adult weight based on their breed category. One way of calculating: Toy & Small Breeds : taking the 6 week weight, you double it, then double again! Ex. A 1lbs 6 week old puppy would be a 4 lbs adult ( 1+1= 2... 2+2= 4) Medium & Large Breeds: take their 14 week weight and double it. Then you add half of the 14 week weight to that total. Ex. A 20lbs 14 week old puppy would be a 50 lbs dog (20+20+10 =50) These calculations can provide an estimate of your puppy's growth. This clowder of kittens come with a message This adorable quintet of kittens came into the clinic the other day for their first exams and vaccines! Everyone in the clinic had to visit and loved playing with these cuties! A very kind lady had found these kittens without a mother and she took them in and cared for them. Unfortunately, it is all too common that we hear stories of unwanted kittens being left at stranger's properties. With many cats going without neuters and ...spays, the feline population grows above what can be cared for. Luckily this sweet litter of kittens were able to be well cared for While you enjoy these fun pictures, they would like to share the message of reminding everyone to spay and neuter their cats! Please remember to remain within the limits of the number of pets you can realistically take good care of
