The COVS team send our best wishes with Lauren as she leaves us to take up an exciting opportunity with the University of Guelph. Lauren, who holds a Bachelor of Science degree in animal biology and a Master's degree for her work in cardiac physiology, will be joining the staff at the Animal Health Laboratory at UofG . Lauren's duties will be divided between the specimen room and the post mortem room, and we know that the samples we submit will be in good hands!... What do a veterinarian’s particular skills and training add to a spinal adjustment? Dr Rainee Stoddart: I think that spinal manipulation therapy can pair very successfully with ‘traditional’ veterinary medicine. In a significant number of cases where I am booked for VSMT, it turns out that the horse has a previously undiagnosed underlying musculoskeletal disease that is contributing to the clinical signs the client is seeing. It’s not that these horses wouldn’t benefit from V...SMT, in most cases they would; however, VSMT alone may not be an appropriate treatment plan for cervical arthritis or a fractured navicular bone (both real life examples that I have seen more than once). As a veterinarian I am able to bring my knowledge of these other conditions to the appointment and change course to investigate these other avenues if the situation calls for it. How is my horse’s back important to their performance? Dr Rainee Stoddart: When many clients think about joints, structures like hocks or stifles come to mind. These are obviously very important joints and when they become diseased it can have a large impact on our horse’s health. Equally as important as the joints in our horse’s limbs are the joints in their back. We tend to think of the back as this rigid structure that has little motion. Many of us spend a lot of time sitt...ing on it! But in reality the equine spine is extremely mobile. It is made up of, on average, 54 different bones. Each of these vertebrae has multiple joints that connect them to the bones adjacent to them. Each vertebra is capable of movement in three directions. How can back pain affect my horse? Dr Rainee Stoddart: Many of us are aware of the widespread effect a sore back can have. You tense up all your muscles trying to hold the sore part still, and sometimes you change the way you bend over or even walk. Some people are acutely aware of the close relationship our spine has with our nervous system. A joint with an abnormal range of motion in just the wrong spot can send an electric shock of pain down your entire leg.
