Today we are featuring Natalie Hunter! Natalie Hunter is an artist from Hamilton, Ontario. Her work extends across photography, sculpture, installation, and video. Throughout her art practice she explores the poetics of time, chance, perception, light, motion, and making as they relate to sensory comprehension and memory formation. In both image making, sculpture, and their installation, light is fundamental to her process. She often works with photographs on transparent fil...m and other suspended, ephemeral, translucent, malleable, or fragile materials that embody the slippery space of thought, memory, time, and the act of making. Combining the intangible staples of film exposurelight and timewith the material aspects of sculpture, she creates immersive experiences and intricately layered installations that evoke reverie, and poetically trace experiences of thought. Natalie Hunter holds an MFA from the University of Waterloo. Her work has been included in numerous exhibitions, including: the Hamilton Supercrawl, the Art Gallery of Hamilton, University of Waterloo Art Gallery, Thames Art Gallery, Rodman Hall Arts Centre, Mississauga Living Arts Centre, the Art Gallery of Windsor, Centre 3 for artistic + social practice, Factory Media Centre, Latcham Art Centre, and Museum London. She is the recipient of several awards including Ontario Arts Council Visual Artists Creation Project Grants for Emerging Artists, and a Canada Council for the Arts Research and Creation Grant. She is a sessional instructor at the University of Waterloo where she recently received an Excellence in Online Teaching Award. You can see more of Natalie’s work at natalie-hunter.com or by following @natalogue

Dear Centre[3] Members, These are challenging times, and one of those challenges has been transitioning from in-person operations and programming to online. This has resulted in some delays in traditional timelines and communications. We apologize that this notice was not sent out earlier. In November, we were optimistic that we would be able to have the AGM in person. By December we realized that is not a reality, especially as our numbers rise in Ontario. We were also waiti...ng to see if there would be more restrictions, which there is. Updates at the governance level - the Board appointed Janet Rogers to the Board in 2020. Please see below for Janet’s Bio. Centre[3] also has one opening for a new board member as Jim Ruxton, long-standing board member, will be stepping down. The nomination committee has selected a nominee whose Bio will be circulated at the AGM. Our 2020 AGM will be via zoom on Thursday, January 28th at 7:00 pm. We will circulate the AGM report on the night of the meeting. To receive a copy of the agenda, and a zoom link to this virtual event please RSVP to [email protected] by Wednesday, January 27th To connect about Membership please contact Mariel at [email protected] Thank you, Centre[3] Team [Image description: Illustration of a computer screen, with the words A G M Annual General Meeting 2020]

Today we are featuring Karen Logan! You can see more of Karen's work at www.karenloganart.ca "I earned my advanced honours certificate in Visual Arts from Mohawk College and although I work in various media my most recent series uses Chinese Brush Painting techniques on semi absorbent mulberry rice paper. My background as a mechanical draftsperson and technical illustrator required precise, clean and uncluttered work. This (un)fortunately has had a huge impact on how I... paint as I strive for precision and perfection in each piece. However, nature is never perfect so I am learning to accept the flaws and just enjoy the process. My work with environmental organizations and love of nature are my biggest influences when choosing subjects. Living in Hamilton my entire life I know there is an important story here that can be told through my art. Geographically Hamilton is located at the northern most part of the Carolinian Forest and as a result is home to more species than probably anywhere else in Canada. The escarpment that surrounds the lower city helps to further protect and enhance the extensive biodiversity that it houses. Our changing climate is threatening this wonderful piece of nature and more and more of these species are being pushed out. As a young child I loved to hike and explore the woods near my home always seeking to find the next unique plant, insect, bird or amphibian. These adventures influenced my appreciation for the abundance of life around me and helped make me aware of the fragile beauty of the ecosystem that exists in Hamilton. Life is so busy now we often don’t see what is in the world around us and we take our native species for granted. My goal with this project is to highlight the variety of native species found in the Hamilton area. This series of work shares both the beauty and diversity of nature that (when we look) we all have right in our own back yards and provides an opportunity to add my voice to the growing concerns on climate change and the risks to our natural environment." Sitelines is a community arts project by Centre[3] in collaboration with the Mental Health Rights Coalition, which offers free arts-based workshops to adults with lived experience of mental health and addiction. We are sad to announce that Sitelines will be coming to an end with the end of this year. Even before the pandemic hit, the Sitelines community has been a creative and supportive one, and the transition to online programming only helped us grow and connect with more... people. Through these uncertain times, our workshops have brought folks together virtually to learn and create and have fun. We have two final workshops for the month of December, and our drop-in Open Studio will continue to run every Monday from 3:30-6:30 until the end of 2020. To find more information about these workshops, please visit the community arts section of our website. To register please email Ariel at [email protected] It’s been a privilege to connect with so many people in creative ways over the last few years. This may not be the end of Sitelines forever! Sitelines has been generously funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Today we are featuring James Collier! Please read what James had to say about his art practice below, and follow @jmascollier to explore more of his work! Over the past year and a half, I've kept up a consistent daily sketchbook practice which has basically renewed my interest in art. By compulsively doodling and filling pages with no goal in mind, I've found that repetition and simply enjoying the physical act of drawing has been able to shed light on recurring motifs and... bring about ideas for work that I want to refine further. It's also made art more approachable now that I'm less worried about things being "good", or holding up to some external standard while I'm drawing. I'm interested in pieces that may seem partially unfinished or have an intensely visible quality of the artist's hand. While I grew up exclusively drawing comics, (and have a cartoonist parent) I'm less focused on narrative at the moment than I am on standalone art pieces that could function as an illustration while also entering a certain grey zone in terms of being specifically defined as such. At the moment I'd like to continue to just improve my observational drawing at which I'm essentially a beginner and try my best to not give up on art, (despite its seeming futility) which will likely be a never-ending struggle. I'd also like to get into printmaking as soon as that's possible, as well as comics in the coming months. I'm continually inspired by a wide array of cartoonists, painters and the people that I live with. Thanks to James for participating in our feature, if you are a member of Centre[3] and would like to have your work featured please reach out to Mariel at [email protected]!

Today we will be featuring Kelsey Burns! Kelsey answered a few questions for us, please see below! What’s your favourite texture, by touch? Kind of gritty. I like matte. I like touching things and there being somethin' to it! Running your fingers along something that has some indents, finding grooves. I like that a lot.... Can you think of a time you had to adapt to a sudden change, and benefitted from the experience? So the most obvious time I think that I’ve had to adapt to a sudden change has been the pandemic. I was taking classes at DVSA for pottery, so when the pandemic hit I wasn’t able to make pots anymore. So I ended up getting a wheel and making stuff at home, and was able to go from just a once a week class for 10 weeks to making stuff whenever I wanted. It ended up helping push me to progress with my ceramics infinitely I think. What brings you joy? So many things bring me joy! Wow such a nice thing to reminisce on. Mostly, my loved ones. I love connecting with people, I think that’s my biggest source of joy. Really getting into it and having conversations with people feels so good. Looking back on your practice 5 years ago, what has changed, and what made that change happen? So, 5 years ago I didn’t actually have a practice... I would paint and draw sporadically but never was too dedicated. I think just finding pottery has changed how I perceive myself as an artist. There are so many things that can be incorporated into ceramics, I can paint anything I want on a pot! I can make any shape I dream of.... ok I will be able to one day... but it could be done! Pottery has just opened a door for me personally -mentally too- where I’m just always excited because there is SO much to learn, so many ways to make and create it is just so limitless so I feel inspired always, and also have just started feeling comfortable calling myself an artist! Today we will be featuring the work of Member Greg Branscombe! "As a father in a stable career, I made a difficult, but easy decision to change the direction of my path in life. I recently resigned after a 20-year career as a stock trader, in Toronto's financial district. I gave up the stability and routine a lifelong career provided. I traded security for change, all in hopes to fulfil my deep-rooted passion for art. ... I have been an artist at heart for as long as I can remember, painting, sketching and drawing to fulfil my craving for creativity. I have recently found myself immersed in art, and the culture surrounding it. I am fortunate to be learning from some very creative and talented individuals in this industry, who have provided me with positive feedback and encouragement. My art is a product of my imagination, which I express through multiple types of media. It is my ambition to create artwork that will enhance the environment it occupies and inspire those who view it." This series of photos showcases the progression of a piece called poppies. Screen-printed in our studios! "I created this drawing many years ago while working in the securities industry. I have silkscreened five large versions of this image on Canvas and then finished with acrylic paint." After careful consideration and reflection, we have decided to open our studios to members beginning Wednesday, August 5th. The Exchange is a storytelling and textile-focused one-year project from March 2019 to 2020 that promotes intergenerational sharing between older adults and youth members of Indigenous and Newcomer communities in Hamilton. Participants collaborated with artists to create visual pieces that explore their knowledge and experiences of migration, oppression, resilience, community, and tradition, and how it affects them personally. The project included four rounds of worksh...ops each with different facilitators and participants. Workshops were based in storytelling, linocut (a printmaking technique), and textiles/sewing. Both facilitators and participants were individuals from Racialized, Indigenous and Newcomer communities. The first part of this project involved two groups: a group of Indigenous peoples who met for weekly sewing classes at the Aboriginal Health Centre, De dwa da dehs nye>s, and a group of new immigrants from majority East African countries, who met weekly at the Wesley EarlyON Child and Family Centre. Though different in structure, individuals in both groups created articles of clothing, from Regalia to Caftans, some using printmaking techniques such as linocut, that reflected their stories. The wearable art produced from The Exchange was part of Supercrawl 2019 Fashion Pop-Up Show on Saturday September 13th. The community participants presented their work on the runway, promoting intergenerational and cultural sharing and learning. The goal of The Exchange was to support the social participation and inclusion of older adults in the community utilizing the arts as an active engagement tool. Thank you to Danielle Boissoneau, Suad Badri, Wilamina McGrimmond, Michelle Thomas, Janet Marie Rogers, Laura Reid Kooji and Ariel Bader-Shamai Centre [3] acknowledges the support of the New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP) Community-Based Program under Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), making The Exchange possible. Unfortunately due to COVID-19 we are unable to have our regular June Art Education and Community Arts Exhibition in our main gallery, which highlights works produced by students from both schools boards and our wider community. We are very excited to present this online exhibition, which you can view by following the link here: shorturl.at/einM6 or by going to the Exhibition section of our website at www.centre3.com For the 2020 exhibition, we will highlight two projects:... our art educational project Art[2]Enrich and our community arts project The Exchange. The first image highlights our educational project Art[2]Enrich. In 2019 and in partnership with @bodybravecanada , Centre[3] delivered an arts-based pilot project titled Arts[2]Enrich within two schools from the Hamilton Wentworth District School Board. Our second image highlights our community arts project The Exchange. The Exchange is a storytelling and textile-focused one-year project from March 2019 to 2020 that promotes intergenerational sharing between older adults and youth members of Indigenous and Newcomer communities in Hamilton. The project uses the arts to empower and inspire the ageing communities to share their knowledge and life stories with youth. #online #onlineexhibition #community #bodybrave

We, the staff and board of Centre[3] for Artistic and Social Practice are dismayed and angered by the recent murders of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and George Floyd in the United States as a result of state-sanctioned police violence, in addition to the recent deaths of D’andre Campbell and Regis Korchinski-Paquet here in Canada. We stand firmly in solidarity with Black communities globally and raise our voices against anti-Black racism and commit to challenging white supr...emacy. As an arts organization, we recognize the ways in which our galleries, museums, and collecting practices were forged in colonialism. As a publicly funded organization, we acknowledge and understand that we are inherently complicit within the established structures that sustain systemic racism. As both an organization, and individuals, we will continue to hold ourselves accountable and acknowledge the myriad of ways that white supremacy is the bedrock of institutional racism that causes harm to Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour. We invite our members and visitors to do the same. We have always tried to ground ourselves with empathy and conscience to create and sustain a culture of inclusion and anti-oppression. We strive to create programming that reflects our commitment to supporting diversity, and we recognize that there are many other ways in which we can support and create space for the efforts of Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour communities who have a long history of leading anti-racist, anti-colonial, and anti-oppressive initiatives. Given our location on stolen Indigenous land of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the fact that we frequently collaborate with members of Black, Indigenous and other racialized communities, it is our duty as an artist run centre to commit to decolonization and anti-racism, while amplifying the voices of our communities who have been and are currently doing the work. We strive to be actively anti-racist and stand against systems of oppression by continuously educating ourselves, supporting various forms of Black cultural production, being patrons of Black-owned businesses, holding space, and carrying forward the work.
