Over the past three years, the EUCAnet team collaborated with a group of scholars from across Canada (University of Alberta, University of British Columbia, Carleton University, Dalhousie University, University of Montreal, University of Ottawa, York University, University of Victoria) on enhancing the networking and outreach activities for the European Studies community in Canada. Beate Schmidtke, who led the project, was able to draw in a few fellows from the Centre for Gl...obal Studies to contribute to the ECSA-C. Pablo Ouziel was elected as the ECSA-C Young Researcher president and involved in various media alerts and the video production. Keith Cherry and Mehdi Hashemi wrote a policy memo and participated in our YRN interview series. Benjamin Perrier (BIG project), Miriam Müller (former fellow), doctoral students Franziska Fischer and Fazila Matt were also able to share their expertise in the field of European related studies. Last but not least the ECSA-C organization has had strong ties with the University of Victoria: Oliver Schmidtke and Emmanuel Brunet-Jailly were leading the organization as presidents in the past and brought the ECSA-C Biennials to the University of Victoria twice. Being strong supporters of this organization, they were happy to contribute to the expert comment series on COVID and the future of the EU together with Valerie D’Erman (European Studies lecturer and Board Member of ECSA-C) and Helga Hallgrimsdottir (BIG). In law, the border is a common legal instrument of reciprocal and respective territorial differentiation between states. The European Union is a scene where we observe both the transformation of the bordering processes, the boundary-line and the transboundary spaces, legal modernity and juridical postmodernity. The territorial borders of the member states as well as the legal borders of the internal order of the states are integrated into the European "juridical and spatial" ...order and into common European policies. Among other effects, the European Union internalizes international borders and Europeanizes them in a harmonization of national policies, and in the emergence of a "territorial policy" or even a "territory" of the EU. The traditional functions of the border have thus changed. Police and customs controls have changed. Borders must now be "smart" and managed in a "shared" way. Because of the role of the EU, as an actor and as a factor, the state border on the scale of European construction is postmodernized. It means, States are not longer the only juridical operator in the phenomenon of legal bordering. There is no longer a modern border in the European Union. The interest of this lecture is to reflect on the new legal frontiers in general in the era of globalization. We will speak about the EU and the overtaking of modern borders in the light of material crossings; and about the EU and the overtaking of modern borders in the light of the relationship between legal orders. Benjamin Perrier is a scientific research collaborator and legal scholar in the "Borders in Globalization" program at the Center for Global Studies at the University of Victoria. Participatory Video (PV) offers ways for communities to be directly involved in sharing and shaping their own stories by having a lead role in creating their own films. The process of PV brings people together to explore issues, be creative, share in their own voices what they feel is important, and communicate this to others through the medium of film. While PV is designed to elevate the authentic voice the community, important ethical questions and issues can still arise ab...out the processes as well as the products that are co-created. For example, these might relate to ensuring communities are the beneficiaries of the work, creating culturally meaningful and appropriate consent processes, protecting the knowledge and wisdom that is shared from being misunderstood and misused, and ensuring community responsibilities and rights are upheld in the final products. This webinar is an invitation to learn and share about the responsibilities, values and rights that surface in PV practice with Indigenous communities. Through a combination of presentation, conversation and interactive discussion with participants, speakers will highlight relevant ethical guidance, explore practical examples of ethical considerations in participatory video, and offer suggestions, ideas and resources for how to be aware of and respectfully address the issues that may arise. Speakers: Kelly Bannister (Co-Director, POLIS Project on Ecological Governance) and Elder Ira Provost (Piikani First Nation and Manager of Piikani Nation Consultation).
