The Karolinska Institutet study found that the participants that had high ADHD tendencies - inattentiveness and emotional instability - showed greater cognitive impairment after a night of sleep deprivation than the participants with low ADHD traits. 'One of the reasons why these results are important is that we know that young people are getting much less sleep than they did just ten years ago, explains Dr Petrovic. If young people with high ADHD-traits regularly get too little sleep they will perform worse cognitively and, what’s more, their symptoms might even end up at a clinically significant level.' #sleep #ADHD #cognitivefunction #sleepdeprivation

Researchers from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have discovered a brain protein that is both regulated by circadian clock genes, and involved in the removal process of amyloid plaques, a hallmark of Alzheimer's Disease. This link "could help explain why people with Alzheimer’s frequently suffer from sleep disturbances, and provide a new target for Alzheimer’s therapies." #circadianrhythm #alzheimers #sleep #research

"We have to remember that [the] elderly population, those are the same people who 70 years ago would go to war for this generation. A great reminder to people who feel their rights and freedoms are being impacted by the current restrictions. If that isn't reason enough to wear a mask in public, maintain physical distancing, and respect the current restrictions:... "If you get admitted to hospital with covid-19, 40% of people will have ongoing lung changes, and for 10-15% that's permanent" #wearamask #socialdistancing #weareallinthistogether #protectthevulnerable #protectyourselfandothers

The University of Georgia study results "revealed abnormal levels of the four cytokines [proteins involved in cell signalingassociated with autoimmune disease] in patients with untreated sleep apnea, suggesting that poor sleep and inadequate oxygen supply may affect the cytokines." Sleep apnea affects more than 20% of adults worldwide and when left untreated is linked to serious health conditions, such as heart disease, Type 2 Diabetes, stroke, and cognitive/mental disorders.... Visit our website for more information, or to make an appointment to see one of the CSHP's sleep physicians. Being scared during a pandemic is normal, no matter how young or old -- you are. It’s all about the uncertainty, right? says Trish Dubyk, unit manager at th...e Alberta Children’s Hospital. Adolescents and us adults, we still have the same kind of fears. If you need to seek immediate medical attention, remember that emergency rooms are open. If you’re a parent or family member of a patient, just remember that you’ll be asked to follow certain visitor restrictions, including wearing a mask. The visitor restrictions are in place to keep staff safe, to keep each other safe, parents, families and visitors, Dubyk says. We’ve seen what outbreaks can do, and how it can be really impactful to a unit, a site, a facility, a community. And if you don’t need care during the pandemic, please do your best to help others stay safe and healthy. We all have to play our part. We have to make sacrifices. We have to limit our cohorts, wear our masks, protect the vulnerable, the elderly, the immunocompromised, the newborns, she says. Hang in there. Be patient. This feels like it will last forever, but it won’t.

"Adults with the healthiest sleep patterns (morning risers, sleeping 7-8 hours a day and no frequent insomnia, snoring or excessive daytime sleepiness) experienced a 42% reduction in the risk of heart failure compared to those with unhealthy sleep patterns."
