Yes the annual Centre Ring charity drive is on! And this year our charity of choice is The Jean Tweed Centre. Some of you will remember years ago we did a number of boxing events in Support of Nazareth House. Well in 2016 Nazareth House merged with the JTC and they told Wayne they are over the top excited to have our help this year. Apologies for the delay in posting but like everything else this year Covid has complicated what and how we can do things. For those of you ...with toys or gift cards if you want to swing by the gym tomorrow or Saturday Wayne will be on site to receive your offering. We suggest you call or message the gym first as we don’t guarantee he will be there for a solid 8 hours each day. A big thank you to everyone who has called with toys. JTC is accepting and the Bourques will be delivering. Thank you all for being the wonderful giving community you have always been - 26 years now - fingers crossed we get to 27. See more

Read below: Hello Everyone, Here we go again...... If you've seen the news regarding the above, you know there's good news and not so good news. The good, effective this Saturday November 14th, all gyms in Toronto can re-open! Bad news, group fitness classes are not permitted and the overall capacity continues to be reduced. So what exactly does this mean for you at Centre Ring? It means: You can box You can train /workout (with weights) We can coach and privately train We can have a maximum of 10 people in the gym at one time. So with all of this said "class" times are now "training" times. You can book your training time the same way you would your classes and use your class pack in the exact same way. We trust this is clear but, if it's not or you have any questions regarding the new measures for boxing gyms please call the gym (416-485-5686) and we will do our best to answer any questions you may have.

#Repost @thetorontoportrait with @get_repost Subject #3 in the ‘Toronto Influencers’ series is Wayne Bourque - photographed from centre ring at his @centreringto boxing gym located at 22 Balliol Street. If anyone has experienced ‘the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat’ it is Wayne ‘The Flurry From Fort MacMurray’ Bourque (*The greatest nickname by any athlete named Wayne by a long shot). As a child he learned to box as a means to protect himself from racial attack...s. He won the Pacific Northwest Gold Gloves at the age of 13, and went on to become the North American Native Boxing Champion three times, in both the welterweight and middle weight categories. Wayne was set to fight for a spot to represent Canada at the 1984 summer Olympics in Los Angeles but broke his leg in a skiing accident eighteen days before the trials. That blow almost knocked him out, but like any champion he got back on his feet and relocated to Toronto, where he eventually opened up a boxercise gym to teach others the ‘sweet science’ (* He coached Russell Crowe @russellcrowe to box and had a cameo appearance as his corner man in the film ‘Cinderella Man’). I first met Wayne when he taught one of my daughters to fend for herself when she was in her teens. He is also Subject #403 and one of my favourite portraits from ‘The Wall’ series in 2019. The lockdown from COVID-19 was the latest blow for Wayne and Centre Ring. As I was photographing him in the corner he told me that he would be able to have more people attend classes if he removed the boxing ring to create more space. But he says he won’t because the ring is his brand. You gotta love a guy who won’t sell out for a few bucks! . Book a class with Wayne and support his important business @centreringto . You will be a little sore...but you will love it. #ourhomeandNATIVEland #boxing
