*TENNIS ELBOW - DYNAMIC WORK* . . . What is it?... . Tennis elbow (or lateral epicondylitis) is the most common overuse injury in the elbow. As you go about your daily lives working and moving, you are stressing the machinery of your body - this is normal. Tennis elbow occurs when the stress at the lateral epicondyle (the outside of the elbow) associated with that use exceeds recovery resulting in inflammation, or even damage to the common extensor tendon - often with pain and other dysfunction such as grip weakness. Interesting side note: it is entirely possible to have severe tennis elbow pain, with no actual mechanical trauma. Pain doesnt necessarily mean injury. . How does it present? . Usually as pain in the outside of the elbow when gripping and twisting (think turning a door handle or wringing a towel) along with weakness gripping/squeezing. The pain can become extreme and can start to affect every part of daily activity. There is often heat and swelling at the site of pain, and it may even present with redness. . What can we do? . Say it with me now, GRADED EXPOSURE. The above exercise is an INCREASE in the charge from our previous isometric hold. This allows for an exercise more representative of daily living to challenge the muscles of wrist/finger extension that are associated with lateral epicondylitis. . Key points: GRADED exposure - Dont just crank on the thing. Work up to and explore your comfort level. - Add greater resistance as you can tolerate. - Experiment with dosage AND recovery. The point of an exercise isnt the work, is the gains made when you RECOVER from that work. . . Elbow pain? Feel free to reach out! Have a friend going through it? Tag them! . . #tendinopathy #tenniselbow #overuse #pain #climbing #physicalrehab #tennis #forearmstrength #forearmpain #elbowpain #lateralepicondylitis #massageassessment #massagetherapy #climbingtraining #climbinginjuries #gripstrengthtraining #griptraining #hockeytraining #inflammation See more
