CANCER DESTROYS LIVES, YOU HELP US REBUILD THEM Ahmed was only four years old when he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia a type of blood cancer. ...At the time, he was living with his parents and three siblings in a Gulf country where his father was doing a demanding job to support his family. However, he had to leave his job and move back to Peshawar, Pakistan, with the family for Ahmed's treatment. In December 2017, Ahmed was registered as a cancer patient at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Peshawar, under financial support. His treatment was to continue for the next three years. His mother recalls how devastated she was watching her little son undergo such a prolonged and painful spell of treatment. At the time, her only source of hope was the way the SKMCH&RC staff had been managing Ahmed's disease. Like all other patients, Ahmed received extra-ordinary care at the Hospital. From doctors to nurses and from pharmacists to healthcare assistants, everyone at the Hospital helped Ahmed cope with the physical and psychological effects of successive chemo sessions. The road to Ahmed's recovery was completed in November 2020 when he received his last dose of chemotherapy. Today, Ahmed is a healthy seven-year-old boy who can take part in studies like other normal children. His follow-up care will continue for a few more years, but he is no longer afraid of cancer.
