The CERLAC Salon Series 2020-2021 presents: Dr. Cristina Delgado Vintimilla (Faculty of Education) Thursday November 26, 1:00-2:30 p.m. ... "Cañari Children and Cows: Thinking Ch’ixi Temporalities in Ecuadorian Andes" In this presentation Dr. Delgado Vintimilla considers the intersection of multiple and, at times, seemingly conflicting temporalities in Andean childhoods. Drawing on Silvia Rivera Cusicanqui’s scholarship on Andean sociology and on her ethnographic research with Cañari families she shares the multiple ways in which Cañari families’ and children’s relations with cows and milk production are fueled by both capitalist and Andean temporalities that cannot be thought as opposites. These temporal relations do not create confusion or limiting binaries but are, Delgado Vintimilla proposes, itinerant. This presentation brings an insight into how Cañari children’s and cows’ collective lives are knitted within ch’ixi temporalities. The talk will be followed by a Q&A session. Register in advance here: https://yorku.zoom.us//tJYtdO6rqjkuGNGYNxmaXUKVxV6YJDOuLVGV After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. Hosted by the CERLAC Student Caucus: [email protected] About the CERLAC Salon Series: This Salon Series is meant to offer students an opportunity to connect with CERLAC Faculty (Fellows) through informal monthly gatherings. Fellows will speak about their research during the salon in their own choice of format (e.g. paper, ad lib, thoughts, stories, questions and answers). Attendees will have the opportunity to listen, ask questions, offer comments, and engage the Fellows in discussion.

CALACS (Canadian Association for Latin American and Caribbean Studies) is sponsoring a series of virtual forums as part of a program entitled Ecuador and Canad...a: Towards the Future. Presidential elections will be held in Ecuador at the beginning of next year. This will be a particularly important election for Ecuadorians given the national and international economic and health crisis that has hit their country particularly hard. Unfortunately, Ecuador, like many other nations today, must contend with a flawed electoral system that allows powerful economic and political actors, big corporations, and in extreme cases even organized crime and subversive groups, to promote candidates who support particular interests rather than those of the majority of citizens. The multi million-dollar electoral campaigns have come to resemble media circuses managed by advertising experts whose function is to sell a product, and to discredit adversaries by any means. In this context, it is essential to generate new and innovative, based on the country’s needs, that draws on approaches from various disciplines. These multidisciplinary forums will involve conversations between Canadian and Ecuadorian academics, who will propose innovative ideas to support the development of Ecuador. Candidates for the Ecuadorian presidential elections (February 2021) will also be joining us during the virtual forums so that participating academics can share their ideas with the candidates. We are looking for ideas that innovative and related to development, broadly defined. These may relate to social issues, health and education, information technology and technology, gender, sustainable energy, trade (both domestic and foreign) and international issues (e.g. Ecuador’s geopolitical situation, regional alliances, etc.). If you are interested in participating, please submit a short proposal (no more than 500 words) summarizing the idea/theme you would like to discuss during the online forums with the candidates to Dr. Pascal Lupien ([email protected]) by Friday, October 16. We also hope that you can contribute with a short essay on a topic within your area of expertise. We anticipate that the virtual forums with the presidential candidates will take place on December 15 and 16. Summaries of the ideas generated, along with the short essays, will be disseminated following the event. Important dates: Nov. 22: deadline for delivery of essays December 15 and 16: Virtual Forums with the participation of candidates. From the conclusion of the virtual forums, the results of the discussions will be disseminated to the general public
