We were able to spend this Valentines Day with The Abbotsford Fire Department assisting them with an injured hiker on McKee Peak. Subject slipped and had a bad fall on some ice, resulting in a lower body injury. We were able to stretcher carry the subject to BCEHS.

SLEDDER SUNDAY 1,700 times a year, on average, BC SAR volunteers respond to search and rescue incidents. (April 1 - March 31) 1,851 is how many times BC S...AR volunteers have responded from April 1, 2020 to Feb. 7, 2021. If you ever get yourself in a pickle out there and a helicopter is coming to help you, remember to use these signals when it approaches . The proper body language when signalling communicates your intentions. YES ~ Make a Y with your arms to signal ‘YES I need help’. NO ~ Make an N with your arms to signal ‘NO help is not needed’. When signalling, stay still & remain in your signalling position. A message from Fernie Search and Rescue; In numerous rescues where we have responded by helicopter, it has been a CHALLENGE FOR US to identify the party in distress. The nature of emergency calls is that we are generally responding with ‘incomplete information’, whether it be precise location, number of subjects, what the party are wearing, or even the exact nature of the emergency. As such, when we spot a group in the general area of the reported incident we must spend time ASSESSING from the air whether this is the group requiring assistance. Our request is to make use of the standard visual signals for communicating with a helicopter, as this will allow to get to where help is needed faster.

40 years ago today. The Hug-A-Tree and Survive program was developed in San Diego, California in response to the loss of the life of a young boy, nine year ol...d Jimmy Beveridge son of Jacquie Smith Beveridge. In February 1981, Jimmy was camping with his parents and brothers when he became lost. Despite a valiant 3-day search by law enforcement personnel, human trackers, 400 volunteer searchers, 200 Marines, and search & rescue dogs, Jimmy regrettably passed away as the result of hypothermia. Many of the people involved were deeply affected by this tragedy and wished to find a way to prevent similar mishaps from ever happening again. The Hug-A-Tree and Survive Program was first adapted for Canadian use by the RCMP. It was updated by the National Search and Rescue Secretariat (NSS) and the Search and Rescue Volunteer Association of Canada in 2015 with new videos and activities to support program delivery. We’ve delivered this program to over 250,000 children in British Columbia and are very proud to continue helping the young adventurers be safe outdoors. https://www.adventuresmart.ca/kids/hugatree.htm

TREE WELLS What is a tree well? A tree well is the void or area of loose snow around the trunk of a tree enveloped in deep snow. These voids present a danger to... hikers, snowshoers, skiers, sledders and snowboarders who fall into them. A tree's branches shelter its trunk from snowfall, allowing a void or area of loose snow to form. Low-hanging branches such as on fir trees contribute to the forming of a tree well, as they efficiently shelter the area surrounding the trunk. They can also occur near rocks and along streams. https://www.adventuresmart.ca/winter/treewells.htm

Search and Rescue teams across the province are bracing for a busier than normal winter season. We do this voluntarily and at no charge. Covid has made everything more difficult to keep our members safe this year. Have a trip plan, take the essentials, know the conditions and know your own limitations.
