Baruch Dayan Ha’emet With profound sadness, the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute (JLI) mourns the passing of Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, of blessed memory. Rabbi S...acks was a teacher of Torah and an ambassador for the Jewish people of historic proportions. He inspired millions of Jews and gentiles with Torah’s wisdom. The enormity of his loss is profound, but his legacy will continue to live on.

Something we all need to do on election night.

Here’s the honest truth. If you asked me a month ago what I thought the New Year, the High Holidays and holidays of rejoicing (Sukkot/Simchat Torah) would be l...ike this year - I would have either cried or laughed. We did not know what to expect. Who would come. How we would thrive in these circumstances. How to inspire the community during these trying times. Etc. Weird and unusual times. Plenty of fear and panic. Plenty of unknown. How do you create an oasis of new beginnings, of togetherness, of unity during a time when indoor synagogue is shut (for our Shul) when community celebrations are cancelled ? But looking back - I realize it was actually a wonderful lesson to us and a lesson for all times. Challenges come. Each of us are faced with incredible challenges, throughout life. But we are given rare opportunities to create new special moments, exactly when everything seems lost. As we enter the shabbat where we begin the very first portion of the torah - Shabbat Bereishit- I bless you all to always find the opportunity to climb over your challenges, discover the hidden blessing in each stumbling block, and to always look for NEW ways to grow, to love and to share. Shabbat shalom. Women and girls (Ottawa) bring in the glow of shabbat by 5:57 pm

(Beautiful Photo taken from Jamie Geller) My sukkot feelings 2020/5781 This has been the year. ... The year unlike any other year. For months had all my kids home. We were confused as how to make it all work. Then some camps opened. Some didnt. Kids got a break. Saw friends. Had fun. Now we are in the holiday season. The holiday of Sukkot represents joy, unity, protection, love. Every year we celebrate by building a large beautiful sukkah on our back deck and pack every single meal with our Ottawa friends. Our sukkah is your sukkah. Hosting is my passion. And cooking is my passion. To cook gourmet, and share the amazing annual experience of eating in the sukkah - one that so many wait all year to experience. A mitzvah that envelops the entire body. A mitzvah that surrounds us with comfort, with warmth and love. But... again, this year is different. No friends in our sukkah. No guests. No hosting. Safety of course is #1 .... but it’s pulling really sad energy out of me. In honour of Sukkot- the holiday of joy - ZMAN SIMCHATEINU - I pledge to fight this sadness, and accepts G-d’s ways with grace. Hashem is the One who knows all. Created all. As we just said in the Yom Kippur Prayers - He is compassionate, gracious, kind and true. So this challenge, like all others, is how it’s meant to be. And we will be joyful, and accepting regardless of the quiet family-only sukkah. I will be rejoicing in my beautiful sukkah, enjoying my delicious meal and I will be thinking of you. Please take a moment tonight to welcome Sukkot - light the candle before 6:23 (Women and girls in Ottawa, Canada) And the next night light the candle after 7:22 And realize that you are in my heart, my thoughts and in my sukkah (virtually). Shabbat shalom and Chag Sameach. , Bassy

My daughter Chana Laber and her friend Tonia Lazaroff created this masterpiece in preparation for Yom Kippur. , ... , , ; , . The above is from the famous Yom Kippur prayer. Each stanza compares us to another material, surrendered to the One molding it. Like the stone in the hand of the mason.. like the tapestry in the hand of the weaver .. so are we in Your hand.. This Yom Kippur, may we surrender to the pottery wheel. May we have faith, and strength to be the vessel for G-d’s light on earth. G-d is weaving our threads into a tapestry. It’s time to surrender and let go! Let go and receive the blessings. Let go and receive Hashem's light! Chana Laber (@laberoflove Tonia Chazanow (@thetanyaproject music by Rogers Park Ba
