There’a mitzvah that is not well known, since it’s extremely private. The mitzvah of mikvah connects each woman and her family to their innate spirituality, bri...nging blessings to themselves and those around them. Water is the primary source of all living things. It has the power to purify, restore, and replenish life. Mikvah ensures that G-d is a central part of our relationships and families. As a child I would listen to the stories of women back in Russia who sacrificed to keep the mitzvah of mikvah. Women who went out under the cover of darkness into the wilderness, cutting a hole in the ice to immerse in freezing water, tying a rope around their waist to ensure they wouldn’t drown. These women traveled far distances by horse and buggy to ensure that they could keep this special mitzvah. But that was in the olden days. Or was it? I was SHOCKED to learn that for years, some mikvah-observant Jewish women in communities in North America have had to travel hundreds of kilometers by plane, train, or car to reach the closest mikvah. They set aside many hours even days to travel long distances, incurring substantial costs each month. At times, they've cut themselves on rocks as they immersed in frigid natural bodies of water! The hardships, distance, time, and cost involved prevent dozens of other women from participating in the mitzvah of mikvah. Seven of these remote Jewish communities (three are in Canada!) have partnered together and are collectively raising $1,500,000 USD to 'bring mikvah home' and build a mikvah of their own in each of their communities. Click the link below to read their stories and support them as they endeavour to build their own mikvahs! www.bringmikvahhome.com/
