Why Motivational Interviewing? Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a communication style to enhance engagement and build motivation for change across a range of populations and practice areas, such substance use and mental health, child and family services, physical rehabilitation services, education and prevention programming. It is a respectful and compassionate way of supporting people in making sometimes very difficult changes in their lives, and has also been found to be ...helpful when working cross-culturally. Combining relational and technical skills and strategies, an MI approach supports service providers to initiate and guide change conversations in an engaging and effective manner moving from persuasion to possibility. Communication is purposeful and focused, as service providers draw out reasons to consider changing from the individual, versus telling them what they should do. MI is especially helpful when motivation is low; there are mixed feelings about changing; engagement is a challenge; and people are having difficulty in making positive changes (Naar-King 2011). We were so please to attend the 2017 MINT Forum in Malahide, Ireland in October. The international gathering of MI trainers is a chance to re-connect with colleagues, be inspired and continue to grow as MI facilitators. We look forward to sharing our learning and adventures!
