Progress has been slow and supply is significantly behind provincial targets.The short supply of rental homes has caused the most vulnerable members of our community to find themselves without a place to live. Isn't it incredible how government organizations have pivoted to virtual meetings in 2020? What are the odds of virtual access to City Council meetings continuing in the future? My team and I are now very much in the habit of municipal Council meetings, public hearings, urban design panel, and municipal meetings of all kinds from our home offices. Truly, I prefer being comfortable at home for these meetings. A year ago this week, I was presenting at a public hearing for a rez...oning in Calgary. I flew to Calgary, stayed in a hotel, hung around City Hall Council Chambers for two days straight, ate in restaurants, and arrived home completely exhausted. Attending meetings from the comfort of my own home was truly unthinkable one year ago. While face-time is valuable, it is not everything. There is value in having options and the ability to make decisions on a project-by-project basis. Will the learnings of the risks and benefits of virtual Council meetings enable us to continue this format into the future? The fact that I am self-critical has been a huge advantage for me. Because I am self-critical, throughout my career, I have placed a lot of value on collaboration with specialists to deliver results. Real estate development is incredibly complex. Even with a leadership background and technical skills as a professional planner, it is impossible to know everything. My ability to empower others and acknowledge, I do not know, has enabled success in my career, my work in the ...community, in parenting three teens, and for my clients in helping them to navigate land use regulations to get projects approved.
