In response to Karl Cook's recent video shared to Instagram discussing the equitation divisions, Stacia Klein Madden is offering her professional perspective: I... will start by stating that I admire Karl Cook for riding successfully at such a high level - it is many young riders’ dream. I will answer some of the questions he posed and address some of the key topics from my point of view since I am probably one of the trainers he is speaking about in the video. I do not aim to argue or be combative towards Karl’s remarks, but just weigh in with my philosophy. "What is the purpose of equitation? - To me the word is synonymous with good riding." When I look up the definition of equitation it says, The art and practice of horsemanship and horse riding." I have never been taught that the purpose of equitation was to slow the riders down. I was surprised at the comment that a trainer should be able to teach all the fundamentals of good riding in one year or less, otherwise you are a bad trainer. Equitation is not a prerequisite for riding a hunter or jumper properly, but it can provide a platform to use as a springboard to ride at a high level in other divisions. Obsessing over any one thing is never a good training tool. My teaching philosophy is to try and give all young riders a solid platform to build off of by giving them instruction, strength, goals, and confidence so they have the tools they need to compete in hunters, jumpers, and/or equitation. As a trainer I get great satisfaction when young riders go on to stay in the industry in any discipline. Why ride in the equitation division and 1.40m classes? - My answer is: to create a well-rounded rider. A trainer can use the equitation division to work on techniques like pace, line, and track that eventually can become second nature when jumping the 1.40m tracks. Horses gain confidence jumping smaller fences as do people. Instead of just doing a small low schooling class, a rider can compete and be competitive at a lower height. Cost of equitation horses does not help the sport - All of the divisions have many top expensive horses competing, I am not denying that. In the equitation division especially the leasing market has become very popular for junior riders in general. I attribute this to trainers being able to test the riders in different divisions and then make an educated decision at the termination of the lease if a purchase investment makes sense either in the hunter, jumper, or equitation market. It is important for a rider to become as educated as possible while trying to navigate the beginning of a young riders career, and the equitation can play an instrumental part in this process. When planning a junior rider's future career in the sport, it is also important to consider higher education. College intercollegiate teams seem to see the value in the equitation, as many are offering tremendous education scholarships to riders that are scouted, primarily from the equitation divisions. There are currently 24 NCEA ‘varsity’ teams, which offer scholarships. As a trainer, I am not trying to sell the equitation to a parent. I am trying to provide a solid foundation and platform for a rider so they can make educated decisions as they climb up the show jumping ladder. "If equitation wants to be its own thing, I am fine with that - The USEF Rulebook breaks the rules down into separate chapters and divisions: Hunter Divisions, Jumper Divisions, and Equitation Divisions. The equitation division encompasses both hunter seat equitation and jumping seat equitation classes. As an instructor, I teach many riders that own one horse. If that horse is an equitation horse, I can educate the rider to the hunter division riding and rules by using classes like the WIHS Hunter Phase. I can educate them to the hunter seat equitation rules and division by showing in the USEF Medal and ASPCA Maclay classes during the year. The classes that educate the rider to the jumping seat equitation are the WIHS Jumper Phase and the USEF Talent Search. The industry is big and there is room for riders to choose which discipline is a fit for them once they have become educated to all. The primary equitation division tapers off once the riders reach 18, so in my opinion riders cannot get stuck in the equitation division. Equitation is not applicable to the jumper ring - Show Jumping is a complicated sport. The equitation division can provide short term goals for riders and teach them how to handle pressure and manage expectations while the training wheels are coming off so to speak. They learn how to set goals, manage to have the horse and rider peak at important events, and compete on a championship level. I believe this is all applicable to showing competitively in the jumper ring. Trainers do not necessarily like un-athletic, overweight, slow horses that do not use their backs. Horses are athletes and need to be trained as such. An equitation horse showing at 3’6 may not have to be as fit and trim as a horse jumping 1.50m and doing speed classes. The turnout of horse and rider is part of showmanship. I love watching former students stay in the sport. It does not matter if they become a hunter rider, a jumper rider, an assistant trainer, or perhaps they start their own business. Out of curiosity, I pulled past results from the 3’6 Finals dating back to 2001, which include the USEF Talent Search East and West, the USEF Medal Finals, the WIHS Equitation Championship, and the ASPCA Maclay Finals to see how much of a platform the equitation division may have provided. USEF Medal Finals: 13 of 18 winners currently still active in the sport, with 10 riders competing at the Grand Prix level USEF Talent Search : 16 of 18 winners currently still active in the sport, with 12 riders competing at the Grand Prix level WIHS Equitation Championship: 15 of 18 winners currently still active in the sport, with 10 riders competing at the Grand Prix level ASPCA Maclay: 17 of 18 winners currently still active in the sport, with 13 riders competing at the Grand Prix level I know it was said you can’t just compare to the top of the sport, but these statistics clearly show that the American Equitation division provides a great foundation for the young riders of today to go on and pursue their dreams!

Mid Summer Classic and Jump The Heat Recap: Chaplin Eq had a fantastic week at BOTH Paramount Equestrian Centre and RMSJ. Major highlights of the week go to Marie Bolorinos winning the 0.80m Mini Prix today! We're so proud of Muxu and how far he's come Levi Stein started her new partnership with Cori Coletta in the CET Mini Medal, coming in 4th out of 11 riders in her very first Jumper Medal. Levi then joined up with Bailee, Olivia and Gillian to form the "Bucking-Hams" to ...place 4th out of 17 teams in the $5000 Nation's Cup. The team fought hard and came back for the Top 4 second round in not so ideal weather! Tuesday Topic - When Is It Appropriate To Use Performance Enhancing Boots on Sport Horses? Recently, I've noticed a few more instances where young riders are beginning to use performance enhancing hind boots on young horses more frequently. I'm hoping to open up a friendly conversation on the topic and share some of my own feelings on the subject. These boots, also referred to as 'pinch' boots, aren't technically harmful to horses if used correctly and the rider understands ...Continue reading
