It's 2017, but this is the ignorance I have to put up with on a regular basis: "Why can't They just stop feeling down, using, get treatment, and become useful m...embers of society?" And everyone is afraid of "They". "They" is our sisters, brothers, neighbors, co-workers, friends, and parents. "They" have been ignored and shushed all their lives, stepped on, treated with scorn, ignored, made to feel less than human, provoked and patronized. Yet, "They" is all of us. I am sick of the noise, whining, pretense, and hand-wringing that people have about Mental health and addictions patients, our fellow human-beings. We are tired of the empty promises of leaders, health regions, community organizations and politicians who promise everything and deliver nothing. Guess what it's really about? It's about common-sense safe Housing, non-judgement, Respect, compassion, empowerment, access to basic healthcare, restoration of dignity, equality, and Science. Youth suicides, Long waiting lists for mental health care, daily overdose deaths and too many lives in peril, while the vocal ignorant public, academics, cynics and politicians chase their tails. Too much discrimination by the so-called healthcare system which fails our patients daily. Just stand in a waiting room at the ER, and your heart will break at the angry judgement heaped on patients who are in a crisis. And yes, it's called a crisis for a reason. And oh, it's called the "Emergency Room" for a reason. Don't complain about something that is in your power to change! Speak up, Volunteer, be less selfish, be less judgemental, but just DO SOMETHING! And if you choose to not do anything, then don't say anything to us about "They", and stay the ****** out of the way of those that are doing something, no matter how small. And yes, it is literally done one life at a time...but isn't that how we got here?.....

Refuse to be defined by your past. Paint a new way, chart a new course, own your future. And remember, life is short and precious time gets wasted with trivial and petty things.....
