TBT to February 13-28, 1988 when Calgary hosted the Winter Olympics. The names of siblings Hidy and Howdy were chosen for the first ever mascot duo by a citizens' jury following a contest organized by Calgary Zoo. Hidy is an extension of hi, and apparently I have spelled it wrong since 1988 . A study group made up of representatives of the department stores in Calgary worked on the choice of mascot. While a brown bear was considered, it had already been used as a mascot for the Moscow 1980 Olympics. It was the polar bear who won because it does not hibernate and represents winter. Today is the day to treasure your family whether it is the one you were born into, adopted into, or choose for yourself. I am lucky to be blessed with a lot of family. My parents adopted me as a baby, and when I was 18 I started to find and meet my biological family. At 25 I was married into the Easter family and have since grown by 2 daughters.
