On this date in Carleton County History: Horace Victor Dalling (1854-1931) Dalling was born in Richmond Parish (Belleville), New Brunswick on February 5, 1854, to Thomas M. and Matilda Jane (Gray) Dalling. H.V. Dalling was a prominent watchmaker and jeweller in Woodstock, New Brunswick. More importantly, he was the creator of the first telephone to be utilized within Woodstock. In 1886, he fabricated and installed two telephones, one within his house and one at his workplac...e. The telephone at his home was used solely by his family and the wires which were connected to the telephone were strung on trees at his home on Connell Street. Not long after, his success with the creation of telephones was brought to the attention of the Bell Telephone Company of Canada who sent a representative to Woodstock to investigate. As the Bell Telephone Company of Canada had patented the telephone, Dalling was threatened with a lawsuit for infinging on the company's patent. Eventually, Dalling and the telephone company compromised; the Bell company opened a small exchange in Dalling's store, using a twenty line switchboard and Bell instruments with Dalling as the agent and manager. Dalling then installed a mini switchboard with eight lines at his home for after hours calls. Dalling's telephone was viewed as a great opportunity to call doctors in town should there be a medical emergency. His switchboard was donated to the Pioneers' Museum by his daughter, Miss Edith Dalling. Researched and written by Emma Chase.

Carleton County History: The McCain Family The McCain family from Florenceville originated in Carleton County with Andrew McCain who, in 1827, came to New Brunswick as an Irish immigrant. Beginning in approximately 1835, Andrew’s family included Henry H. McCain who was born in 1854. Henry maintained an energetic nature and was well suited for the business career with which he chose to pursue. Henry’s business interests were diverse; however, they were centered on the product...ion and shipping of agricultural commodities. Being elected in 1895 and 1899, he served two terms with the New Brunswick Legislature. Unfortunately, Henry died at his home in West Florenceville in 1920. Henry had three children, one of which was Andrew McCain who managed the businesses which were founded by his father and two daughters, Hazel and Muriel McCain. The shipping business which was started by Henry McCain and was continued by Andrew McCain, included many different types of agricultural produce, but it later focused on shipping potatoes, in which Andrew McCain became a major figure. The sons of Andrew McCain continued his businesses and they also founded the present-day McCain food processing empire. Although they are still centered in Florenceville, the businesses have gone international. Written and researched by Emma Chase.
