CHARLOTTE COUNTY ARCHIVES IS PLEASED TO PRESENT OUR SUNDAY AFTERNOON HISTORIC MOVIES NEW PROGRAMME FOR NOVEMBER 3rd AT NBCC 2ND FLOOR (ELEVATOR ACCESS) ... Films by W.C. Bill O’Neill and Leigh Williamson with new narration. Produced by Franklin Cardy. ************************************************************************************* Third Sunday November 3rd at 2 p.m. PROGRAMME: LINKSCREST ESTATE CA. 1940 15.02 mins Linkscrest (now called the Anderson House) was the home of Sir Thomas and Lady Tait in the late thirties until he died in 1941. The house was built in the late 20s and the video shows how it was surrounded with elegant landscaping, flower gardens and a striking rockery (still remembered by Nancy Keay); with kitchen garden, orchard and a large chicken house that is still there. THREE WEDDINGS IN ST ANDREWS N.B. 13.14 mins Film from 1939 of Jim and Maxime Graham’s wedding shower described in the Courier at the time; film of a still unidentified army couple emerging from the United Church, probably in mid 1940s; and good coverage of the Vaughan Thompson and Mary O’Neill wedding in 1947 with family comments. I USED TO LIVE HERE A FORMER PRISONER RETURNS TO THE OLD GAOL. 21 mins. The video records the visit in 2018 of a former prisoner as he stands inside in wonder and tells his story, remembering the time of his incarceration here for several months, including 23 days in isolation in one small cell in 1975. PEOPLE AT WORK IN ST ANDREWS; 1938 TO 1950s. 19.20 mins This video starts with colour footage from 1938 of about 50 volunteers digging and loading sand from a pit to make a new floor for the Arena. Next is a mysteries sequence where considerable effort is being made to remove a few large boulders from the beach with horses and dynamite. Winter returns next with a sequence of ice being cut on Chamcook Lake, filmed shortly after the sad accident in 1938 when five men drowned. A brief clip from Leigh Williamson shows the Connors Ice House being built on Ernest Street and then the rest of the movie shows people and operations at the CPR Wharf and Connor’s Lobster Plant.

It has been another fantastic summer here at the Charlotte County Archives! From the spectacular Old Gaol Day, to the successful speaker series and the Heritage Homes Tour, summer 2019 was made possible by our wonderful staff! Sadly, however, summer is coming to an end and on September 3rd we will be resuming our regular off-season hours being Monday-Friday, 1-4pm. On behalf of the Charlotte County Archives have a safe and happy Labour Day weekend!

Last nights speaker series was a success! A big thank you to Passamaquoddy preservation officer Donald Soctomah for his fascinating talk on petroglyphs and the ancient, rich history of the Passamaquoddy people. Also thank you to everyone who attended! We will be announcing our next series soon!
