Warming or cooling Protein Warming/Hot: Foods like venison, chicken, and lamb (Yang/Warning foods) add heat to the body. Dogs do not sweat, so they will pant and drink more water to cool themselves when given foods that are energetically hot. Certain diseases also produce a lot of heat in the body, including inflammatory conditions like arthritis, diabetes, Cushing’s Disease, and infections. Feeding diets that contain a lot of warming or Yang foods are contraindicated for such conditions. Dogs that are cold, lethargic, and low in energy, however, may benefit from foods that produce more heat in the body. Warming foods can be a great addition to the diet during the winter. Cooling: Most meats tend to be warmer or more Yang in energy, but cold-water fish, duck, and rabbit tend to be cooler (more Yin). Dogs with inflammatory conditions would be better served by eating these cooling proteins. Most dogs with allergic skin disease, for example, fare better when fed a cooling protein-like duck or rabbit. For years, veterinarians have advocated lamb or chicken for dogs with chronic skin infections, dry skin, or inflammatory bowel disease. From a TCM perspective, however, these would be the wrong proteins, since we should be trying to cool the inflammation from the inside. This build-up of food residue can cause a sluggish digestive system, which can over time cause discomfort. ... 2) Cleaning the digestive tract aids your pooch's body in absorbing most of the nutrients being ingested through the cell wall of the digestive tract. Clean digestive system = more nutrients absorbed. 3) The 'brushing' action of the fur also acts as natural protection against worms by brushing away worms and eggs in the digestive system. To achieve optimum protection, it’s advised to feed regularly. (we recommend one feet a week) PLUS it helps negate the need for harsh worming tablets if you combine natural wormers such as these with a worm count test once a year. 4) The fur also aids in cleaning teeth too as it rubs a little of the surface plaque off the gums and between the teeth (without you needing to arm yourself with a toothbrush). 5) Fibre/fur is great for bulking up poo.
