Uncertainty... Its really hard for me to be candid about fear or change. But fear and change are an everyday reality of our life with a rare disease. Right after my sweet Chase’s fundraising event, we spent months figuring out what we were going to do for Kindergarten, while also moving him into school aged support programs/therapies. We began searching for a new team of therapsits that would continue to care deeply and work with Chase’s teaching team. ... Begining in the month of June, we began saying our good byes. First we said a heart wrenching good bye to the loving teaching team at BBMS. We spent six years with this little but mighty school of ours who nurtured and protected both of our our boys. We then said all of our good byes to our talented, giving and caring therapists at Reach. Our final goodbye was to our dream physiotherapist and friend, Colleen, who helped Chase learn to walk, run, jump, and to throw ball...she has wiped away a lot of my tears over the last four years and always gave me hope. Saying all of these good byes has been scary and heartbreaking. I remind myself how blessed we have been with this much love and support. The anxieties of any mom are already high. For me, it’s been constant. Yesterday, Chase walked into Kindergarten and I could finally breathe a bit easier because he was just SO happy!!! Chase was beaming with his sweet, sweet smile. Chase is the most loving and determined little boy. We take for granted speech. It is what makes us who we are, even as children. To be able to express your thoughts the way you want to without limitations is a truly amazing thing that every child deserves to be able to do. Speech Apraxia is a motor speech disorder that makes it hard to speak. The brain struggles to develop plans for speech movement. With this disorder, the speech muscles aren't weak, but they don't perform normally because the brain has difficulty directing... or coordinating the movements. As frustrating as this is for Chase, he is determined and a fighter. He is my superstar

We have been anxiously waiting for some exciting news and yesterday our amazing force, Amber Freed, mother of Maxwell, called us to tell us the BIG news!! This week marked a major milestone in our fight against SLC6A1. Our dedicated team of scientists produced the gene therapy treatment and are actively treating mice. If all goes as hoped, the mice will show improvement and this data will go before the Federal Drug Administration to approve the therapy for human use. Because... of all of you who are fighting along side us, fundraising and raising awareness, all of this has been possible! Everything is coming together... and this is happening!
