Mt.Quandary, Colorado. The highest we've been on a mountain so far! This is one of Colorado's 14ers (mountains above 14,000 feet, or for us Canadians, mountains above 4200m). Living in Calgary for so many years, we were used to hiking mountains with big elevation gains, so Quandary, at a gain of just over 3300 feet (1000m), this was definitely do able. However, while the Canadian Rockies are big mountains, the peaks of the mountains we are used to hiking, are all under 11,00...0 feet (3300m), and since the trail for Mt.Quandary starts at about 11,000 feet, we were starting the hike at an elevation that we were used to stopping at. High elevation is no joke! We consider ourselves fairly seasoned hikers, and this was the slowest we've ever walked up a mountain! By the last 45 minutes of the hike, I was counting out my steps, 25-50 at a time and then stopping to breathe! We loved every minute of this trail, and can't wait to climb higher mountains!
