The legal effect of a Seller Property Information Sheet ("SPIS") can be confusing for home buyers, sellers and agents alike. Fortunately, Ontario's Divisional Court has recently provided some much-needed guidance on the issue. Here's Ken Ritson and Cody Fraser's analysis on the case.

The rules of the game have changed. Due to a significant decision by the Ontario Court of Appeal, many existing termination clauses in employment contracts may not be enforceable any longer. This past Friday, the inaugural Cheadles Bocce Tournament took place. While there was fierce competition from everyone (fierce is being generous), the winners were Doug and Sandi, who took the tournament with class, finesse, and their shockingly stellar bocce skills! Congratulations, you two!... Style points to Alma for her sweet moves on the court!

It was 11 years ago today that Jim Johnson passed away. Jim was a senior partner of Cheadles for many years. He's remembered as a loving husband, father, lawyer, and community builder. In 1989, Jim founded the Thunder Bay AAA Kings Hockey Program, and in the early 90's, spearheaded the construction of the Thunder Bay Tournament Centre as a public-private partnership with the City of Thunder Bay. A decade later, Jim was integral in creating the Lakehead Thunderwolves hockey... program. Jim was also a Director and Treasurer of the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce, member of the Board of Directors of the Fort William Country Club, Initial Chairman of the Board of the Thunder Bay Economic Development Corporation, President of the Northwestern Ontario Innovation Centre, and member of the Ambassadors Group. Jim was a foundation of humility, honesty, integrity, commitment, and love, that will live on for generations. The team at Cheadles is thinking of Jim and his family today.

It is with very heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our firm's founding partner, David Cheadle, QC. Mr. Cheadle opened this law office in September 1953. For several decades, he proudly served Thunder Bay and northwestern Ontario with integrity and compassion. His impact on the community and the legal profession was profound. The team at Cheadles LLP offers its deepest condolences to the Cheadle family. We'll continue to represent Mr. Cheadle's legacy with pride.... Thank you David.

It was a somber day at the firm today. Our beautiful pine tree was planted in 1992 when the office on Hewitson Street first opened. Since then, it has greeted every visitor we’ve ever had come through the front doors. Sadly, it blew over last night. Once we stop mourning, we’ll get around to planting a new one.
