You’re relaxed, now what?! . . After a massage, every therapist will recommend different things to do to keep your body relaxed and moving properly. .... . Because most of my treatments are deep tissue, this is what I say: Gentle exercise & movement. Our bodies were made to move, so in order to keep things working well, we need to use our muscles. Go for a walk, do some gentle yoga, you can even do a regular workout! (I do suggest lowering your weights though). Hydrate! With massage, toxins are released from the body and we can sometimes feel dehydrated after a treatment- drink yo water! / - use heat to keep things relaxed and ice if there’s pain or inflammation. Stretch! Keep those muscles relaxed and loose! Your therapist might give you some specific ones or you can do usual routine. . . Do your hands ever get tired? . . As an RMT, this is a question I get asked a lot! The simple, straight answer: YES. However, when you’ve been in the game long enough, you learn to use your forearms and elbows to your advantage. .... . Most of my treatments are deep tissue massage, where I’m putting about 70 lbs of pressure through the body (crazy right?!). Usually I can get through 5 of these treatments in a day and still open the pickle jar when I get home Granted, there are days when I’m doing more specific work and need to rely on my hands and thumbs. When that happens, you can find me stretching my hands more often and icing them at the end of the day. . . At the end of it all, being a Massage Therapist is a very physically demanding career, but if you learn to use your body properly, practice good technique and take care of yourself, you’ll last a long time. . . If these hands could talk, they would have stories to tell. As a massage therapist, these hands are my livelihood, my tools. They can feel the tension you hold in your body; they run over scars from past traumas; they feel you breathe and provide a sense of comfort and healing. These hands have been through a lot. They’ve saved a mans life after he was hit by a car and was bleeding to death on the side of the road; they’ve wrapped countless rolls of tape around ankles and w...rists of many football players; they’ve given high fives and applauses of encouragement. These hands held my baby seconds after she was born. They’ve swaddled her and burped her and continue to feed her. They wipe her tears and stroke her hair and hold her little hands. They have linked fingers with my soulmate when we first started dating and now, as we continue to do life together. They house my wedding rings and my Claddagh ring, proudly. These hands pet my dog everyday, hundreds of times over. These hands are everything to me. They’ve been cut, bruised, burnt, held, massaged and kissed. Postpartum wellness is extremely important but sadly, it’s often out on the back burner. Moms, take the time for you- your body, baby and family will thank you for it! . . Here are some things that should be on your list: check in with your @growco.rehab therapist... proper pelvic floor and core rehab exercises massage treatments (fun fact, if you come to me, you CAN bring baby!) proper hydration + nutrition (make meals ahead and freeze them for easy reheat and eat) support system (partner, friends, family who can come over and watch baby so you can sleep, shower or eat) fresh air self-love and patience (being a mom is h a r d!
