Did you know that the Greenock Swamp is home to 11 species of raptors - 8 of which are known to nest there! That's an amazing number given our location in South...ern Ontario. One of the most common raptors in the swamp and the local area is the Red-tailed Hawk. Did you know that.. .. the Red-tailed Hawk is the most common raptor in North America? .. Red-tailed Hawks feed mostly on mammals so you're not likely to see one in range of your backyard bird feeder? .. the Red-tailed Hawk call / scream is the most common one used in movies - regardless of the bird species featured? .. as large as these birds seem when we notice them along roadways and in local fields, even the largest females (25% heavier than the males), only weigh 3 lbs? .. the oldest Red-tailed Hawk was over 30 years old. .. these birds stay in the same territory their whole lives? .. the Red-tailed Hawks are monogamous? .. these birds are not mature until three years of age? .. the Great Horned Owl is their main foe and natural predator, as well as crows? .. they have amazing eyesight? .. when diving for prey they can reach speeds of up to 193 km /hr? Check out the following link (Cornell Lab), to hear their call and find out additional information about this majestic bird! See more

Seeds! I was asked a question regarding what seeds people could be starting now. Stores are beginning to get seeds and seed starting supplies, it's cold outside..., many people are bored, and let's face it, gardeners have itchy fingers. Now is a good time to select the seeds you wish to grow, get an area set up for starting/growing. Choose an area with good lighting. Investing in grow lights is another option. While it's a little early, there are some seeds that can be started now, and in the next few weeks. -microgreens and sprouts -celery -onions -leeks -dusty miller -pansies -snapdragons -geraniums -delphinium -foxglove

Couldn’t resist! I’ve been thinking and dreaming about my 2021 vegetable garden. Already bought a few pouches of seeds and something else to keep the slugs in check. Let us know what you’re planning for your gardens this year. Share photos of seed packets. Pictures of flowers you want to grow. Stories you wish to share about your future gardening projects.
