Chess Federation of Canada 30.03.2021

It is with sadness that I have to report Hal Bond has resigned as the CFC's FIDE representative effective yesterday. A former CFC President, Hal Bond has held this position for many years and guided us through many tumultuous situations. We will have more to say about this in the coming days once we resolve the mechanism of finding and naming a replacement. We have a candidate in mind but have to work out the details with Hal Bond, the candidate, the board and at the same time make sure that we comply with the requirements of the NFP act and our CFC bylaws in the process. We wish Hal Bond the best in all of his future endeavours. - Vlad Drkulec, President, Chess Federation of Canada

The Chess Federation of Canada Club on Chess.com has merged with the Team Canada Live club on the same platform. The membership of the combined club is about 2900+ members. The former Team Canada Live club will now gain access to matches and leagues which are only available to national federations. The CFC will gain access to experienced online organizers of matches with many countries and our players will have the opportunity to play in these matches. This is clearly a win-win which expands the CFC online presence. Many of the members of the club are current, former or future regular CFC members. If you are a member of chess.com, or the old Chess Federation of Canada club on Chess.com we encourage you to join new combined club at https://www.chess.com/club/chess-federation-of-canada

I would like to thank our FIDE president Arkady Dvorkovich and the management board of FIDE for this wise and kind decision (to waive Fide transfer fees in the case of Gilbert Perez, a Manitoba resident and an aspiring representative of the Chess Federation of Canada in the upcoming Online Olympiad for Players with disabilities). I would like also to thank the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (which waived transfer fees due their association), the FIDE Commission... for the Disabled and the Qualification Commission for making this decision possible. Most of all, I would like to thank Vadim Tsypin for his help in bringing this to the attention of FIDE and helping Gilbert Perez to have this opportunity to play for his new country. You have done a good deed here today. I and the Chess Federation of Canada are grateful to you all and would like to thank you for the wonderful job you are all doing in these very challenging times of pandemic. I have never been prouder to be a part of the FIDE community. Vladimir Drkulec President, Chess Federation of Canada

I began my career in chess politics with a impulsive decision at the 2011 Canadian Closed at the tournament meeting prior to the start of the games. Hal Bond had asked for a volunteer to become the masters' representative for the CFC. At the time, I was a chess coach and I was a bit frustrated with some of the decisions being made in youth chess by the CFC. No one appeared to be interested in volunteering for the position and a clear thought came into my head. "If you don't v...Continue reading
