INFLUENTIAL WOMEN IN MY LIFE My Father’s Mother I can honestly say I have never heard Mémére Hébert sing or make music of any kind except for her laugh: it was infectious and frequently used as the answer to everything. She was the Mother of 25 children, 18 of them her own. Her creative and ingenious way of solving problems was outstanding! She lived in a tiny house on the East coast. We visited in the Summer and bunked and ate wherever because almost everyone in town was fam...ily, but afternoons were reserved for Mémére’s place. The best swimming beach was in front of her house. One late afternoon, all us cousins are in the water, fighting with the jellyfish, while the grown-ups are sardined in Mémére’s kitchen. She is steaming fresh clams for supper, and the biggest chocolate cake of all time is in the oven. Well, with all the talking and visiting, that heavenly dessert burnt to a crisp. No problem! She whipped up a huge bowl of icing, slathered a thick layer on the cake, and cut each of us kids a large square. We took the offering outside and licked the icing off; then we came back in with the charred piece of cake and she laughingly slapped a big spoonful of icing on it. We licked that off too and returned again and again until that big bowl of icing was slicked clean. I should put that in a song because THAT will always be the most memorable dessert of my life!
