How to perform a simple necropsy on a chicken. When an occasional chicken dies, it may not always be possible to get it to a diagnostic lab. Dr. David Frame, DVM from Utah State University, will discuss how to perform a simple necropsy. It is not meant to be a replacement for a professional diagnosis, but it can give insights to discuss with a specialist with regards to the cause of death for the chicken. The benefit of getting chicks early is that they will start laying eggs this spring/summer!

I have really been trying to get pics of some of our other pea fowl but this Nigel is always in my face. Its not about them its all about him..always. He is like a dog and wants ALL of the attention. I'll keep working on it lol I suspect that Nigel was hand raised. He is just impossible. Right now he is calm and loving, if a bit pushy. He chatters quietly with me telling me all sorts of gossip about the other birds. He will sit with me whenever I am around. But..there is an...other side to Nigel you havnt seen yet! Just wait til spring when his train is full and he is all about his ladies. I need to gear up in full gladiator wear to even get in the pen. A broom in one hand and a garbage pail lid in the other! He turns into the karate kid with crouching dragon stunt moves. He doesnt like me very much then let me tell you. The broom is the barrier that helps him keep his distance and the pail lid is just so he has something to bounce off of if he chooses to strike. It would be very helpful to have a 3rd arm during spring time to work the feed and water dishes. None of our other pea fowl behave like Nigel. They all keep their distance and prefer not to be bothered. Despite his spring time aggressiveness Nigel is still my most favorite boy. See more

We purchased 10 tiny Chukar Partridge chicks in early summer and raised them in a mini coop in our front yard. They are hardy little birds as we still have 10 today. I released them a few weeks ago into one of our pea pens and they seem to get along just fine. They are the first ones outside in the morning and the last ones in at night. I may have to move them come spring when the peas hit breeding season but for now they are not being bullied at all. I did not expect for them to get so fat. I don’t expect they will have any problems with our long cold winter. They are sweet little birds and will let you get close enough to tickle the belly sometimes. They were not hand raised at all so that’s a little surprising. I guess I’ll have to get a video of that! lol

Uhmm excuse me? You guys are supposed to be inside the fenced area?! The grass is always greener I suppose! These are Wheaton, blue Wheaton Ameraucana! Very pretty little group of birds we acquired this year. They originate from Monkmans Poultry over in Lundar MB. If youre on that side of the city you should definitely source some of these beauties out! I cant wait until they start laying pretty blue eggs! <3

I didnt really like the video I tried of the Mosaics group. It just didnt show them very well. Im still working on my photograph and video skills Anyways here are some pictures instead The mosaics still have some growing to do and it will be awhile yet before we see what they truly look like, but Im pleased with the metallic sheen of colors that can be seen in the right light. They are an interesting and friendly bird. I expected them to be flighty but they are not at all. they come running when they see something in your hand and are inquisitive enough to get under foot when youre trying to do something. I like these birds more than I thought I would. The variety of patterns and colors also keeps the flock very interesting to look at.

Chick Haven Farm 05.06.2020

I leave garden fresh cucumbers around the yard for the chickens to find. Ahh its a good life! This second group of little mosaics are getting bigger! I believe we have kept 12 total to move forward with for the 2021 season. I thought there would be more but we had to choose for the best shape and color. Not all made the cut.

Chick Haven Farm 28.04.2020

Ok I cant contain my excitement anymore! Every year we seem to expand a little! We have these old grain bin type buildings on the property that we just used for storage. We decided to empty them out and convert them into pea houses! Each house will be divided in half and each half will have its own outdoor pen. Both buildings now have wall to wall and floor to ceiling insulation, venting, windows and doors! We are soon to complete the outdoor pens so more pics coming soon! Big excited over the moon Thank You! to Jason, Chris and Brian! Couldnt have done it without all your help and input! Jason is really doing all of the hard work. Im so happy and CANT WAIT for pea family move in day!
