Chilco and Comox Mini-Park 29.06.2021

Coyote Update for Tuesday, May 11, 2021: Witnesses reported an incident where they assisted a jogger who was persistently followed by a coyote on May 4 at 7:30...am along Chickadee Trail, on the north side of Stanley Park. Events leading up to the jogger’s interaction with witnesses were not observed nor reported to SPES. The most effective action that you can take to ensure your and coyotes’ safety is to visit the Park during busier daytime hours while this situation is being addressed (SPES is coordinating research efforts in Stanley Park to shed light on the source of the coyotes’ unusual behaviour to enable an informed response to the situation). At any time, however, please stay alert and prepare to respond to potential coyote encounters. Continue to be vigilant and do not wear headphones on the trails; experts have linked headphone use and consequent distracted behaviour to aggressive coyote and wolf encounters in other parks and regions in North America. Please remember how to respond if a coyote approaches: STOP immediately and be BIG, LOUD, and PERSISTENT until it leaves. Give the coyote space to ensure it has an escape route from the encounter. Please be aware that it is also pupping season for coyotes at this time. Protective behaviour will be displayed particularly towards dogs around den sites. Please find more information on how to prepare for this time through the link below. Report wildlife feeding or other human-coyote interactions in the Park through channels provided in the same link. Coyotes are a very family-oriented species, and it starts with a strong bond between the parents, which mate for life! Their breeding season has now begun with ...us well into the courtship and mating period. At this time, unpaired coyotes seek mates while an existing pair will strengthen their bonds and secure their territory. Their behaviour becomes purposely conspicuous to signal their presence and reinforce their territory against other coyotes and threats. This means they are spotted more in the daytime and are more likely to stand their ground, appearing "bolder." Dogs can be a red flag for them at this time, being so similar to coyotes. They may follow after dogs and dog-walkers until they leave the area escorting them out like security personnel! These are protective rather than aggressive behaviours, and conflicts can be avoided. Please find our information and detailed tips on preparing for this season at http://stanleyparkecology.ca/co-existing-with-coyotes/. There, you can also find our coyote sightings map to see activity in your area, and add your own sightings by reporting them to us.
