Journey to Cumberland: Looking for some great mountain biking? Here on the Island is the little Town of Cumberland. As soon as you drive into town there is a good vibe of Bikes the 2 wheeled self propelled kind!. All are welcome here with a designated parking lot Restrooms and bike wash to top it off. Particular attention is given to those that are willing to put out the effort to reach some of the higher summits. My friends and I took the time and a very long climb to make... the peak to Race Ridges. This is a very technical Double Black ride that will have you riding some exceptionally difficult roots and rocks. The fact that the trail builders managed to build a trail here is a feat of love and devotion. Our time on trail was a difficult one as it had been raining for 15 mins before we reached the trailhead, the rain made it even more difficult with every pedal stroke giving in to slippery roots. Alas I did have to walk a fair bit of this challenging trail. On a dry day though with granny gear I would certainly clean more of it!. The journey back down to the parking lot was an adventurous one to say the least. As a bunch of hardy weekend warriors cramming in as much Mtn Biking as possible into the week, we did get a little lost in the unfamiliar terrain. One stroke of luck (I think!) at one of our regroup see where we are spots, a local who was in his car gave us some valueable info that directed us to a trail called 'Potluck' . On any other Dry Day this would have been awesome but seeing as the rain continued to fall, all 13 rough cut bridges were dangerously wet and slimy!. Never before has my concentration been so focused on the other side of said bridges!. About 6 of them were maybe 20ft (could be wrong) off the ground with little below to cushion a slip out and fall situation. I'm happy to say that my friends and I made it safely across, only one friend slipped out but stayed on the bridge. Pheww!. After that Butt puckering experience we headed across to the more manageable Blue trails of Teapot and such. The rest of the day was a happy mix of Large steps, rocks and even some flow trails all mixed together, with the rain finally giving in to some periods of Sunshine breaking through the clouds.
