It's a great day in the meatshop! The boys are home When the butcher calls .. you go. While I was there I checked out the next group .. they look stunning If you've never seen your beef outside brown paper .. here it is! This is what grass fed beef should look like. Deep, dark red with a thin layer of healthy yellow fat. We don't always get to see our beefs hanging .. but when we find them looking like this .. we know we're doing it right

What is the meaning of this?! There is a boatload of beef coming home tomorrow .. and the meatshop looks like this Who is in charge of this place anyways?

Piglets are by far the most ridiculously cute things that live here. These guys are growing up fast! And mum's doing a bang up job keeping them warm through these arctic windchills

Friends of the farm come in all shapes! This lamb delivery came with a little something extra for a special birthday girl Happy Birthday Brinley!

We're trying something new this year .. not because we wanted to .. but the monsoons made necessary The trouble with hay that isn't dry enough is mold and dust. The cows don't want to eat that and who can blame them But if you take that not so dry hay and wrap it in plastic where the air cannot get at it .. it won't go moldy or breakdown causing dust. Matter of fact .. it starts to ferment using all those sugars caught up in the grass .. making a preserved sweet gras...s feed .. haylage. It was a last resort to try and get some decent grass up for our cows this year. But so many questions come with new things .. Will it work? Will it freeze? Will the net come off? And most importantly .. will the cows like it?! The answers .. it did work, it smells like a brewery .. it did not freeze and the net came off no problem.. and well .. the pictures speak for themselves what the cows think

What on is that Ugly. It's real ugly .. whatever it is But oh man .. you cook that thing properly and the stars align ... So .. what is it? That weird flappy thing on the front of the neck .. it's tough .. it's ugly .. it's really unappealing .. it's .. the brisket Normally something we don't have around here as we grind it to satisfy everybody's ground beef needs .. but it's moving up in the ranks .. in a big hurry. Smoke it, braise it, sous vide it, slow roast it .. whatever you want to do with it .. you must respect the fact that it's a well used muscle and is tough tough tough. If you take it low and slow, you will dissolve the tough, bring out the best of the best beefy flavour and you will have yourself one amazing meal at the end of the day

Can you believe it?! .. The.Last.Bale. was baled today .. 350 acres, 1009 bales and 2 months later .. thats how much hay our Farmer and Papa wrapped up this year Its been a labor of love this year .. between breakdowns and rain clouds and breakdowns .. somehow him and Papa got it done and Ive promised them the tee shirt So now .. we need to bring them home! All those bales .. and our farmers .. need to get off that field. ... We need to circle the wagons .. If any friends of the farm have a 1 tonne truck and trailer .. those bales are heeeeavy .. and have time to make a trip from the field to the farm .. Ill make it worth your while .. Even one trip makes a difference! We need to get our farmers off the field!

Use what you have .. the true farmer way. We are plagued with breakdowns this year .. but the show must go on. In spirit of the haying season that just will not end .. the raking tractor broke down .. so we hooked up the rake to the baling tractor and hooked up the baler to the tilling tractor .. dialed down the horsepower and were off again

Local Food Supply. Way back in April we had huge surge in demand and the butchers were giving me dates of October and January Local food supply and food security has come to the forefront of our minds. I think I found a few of you camping at my gate but so it should be if you ask me ... So I started pushing on the provincial government for more options. We are within proximity to both our local abbatoirs that we had no options really. So I pushed harder. It took 5 months ... I won On farm slaughter is a whole topic of its own but believe me .. its better for our animals and it will be better for all of us this coming fall season

Flank steak. Is it really a steak? Call it what you like.. it's about the most aesthetically unappealing chunk of meat coming out of that steer However, when it's the very last steak taking up residence in the very bottom of your freezer .. way down there with the short ribs .. it's day has finally come ... Coming from the lower abdomen, it can be tough but cut thin it's a perfect fit for your fajitas, stir fry, marinated and grilled .. cheeeeese steak Ours met up with some friends .. namely and cream cheese, rolled up and seared in cast iron Must be time to work on filling the farmhouse freezer .. the farm kiddos are starting to protest

Farmher vs Farmer .. Bone In vs Bone Out .. Prime Rib vs Rib Eye... Perhaps the greatest debate I never knew existed before opening a meatshop .. I just assumed everyone was on my page .. but apparently the farmer and I cant even come to terms So it seems youre on one side of the fence or the other .. there is no middle ground here and it is a very serious matter. You either like the bone or you dont. Im not about to try and turn any view points .. but for anyone who maybe didnt know .. The highly sought after Rib Eye steak is a Prime Rib steak without the bone. Simple as that. Which side of the fence do you sit on this beautiful BBQ day?

Everybody does their part around here! We use the cows and pigs to build our pasture but that doesn't let the cluckers off the hook! They may be small .. but the they leave behind is fierce! It's .. and in our nitrogen deficient soil, the grass goes nuts for it Not unlike our big pasture, this small field also grew approx 4 blades of grass. We've spread assorted grass seed multiple years with minimal results. This is the 3rd year we've moved the birds across it an...d look at it go! The yearlings have been enjoying the fruits of the birds efforts for sure .. As a side note your meatbirds are looking

What.a.mess. Yep .. that's our mess .. we call it our pasture Sometimes things have to look worse before they can look better! Using cows to reverse years of neglect takes management. They've gotta move and it's a multi year project. ... When we moved here you could count the blades of grass .. there were wild strawberries and invasive weeds a plenty .. no grass .. and soil with no life in it .. no organic matter, no moisture .. nothing .. So .. first things first .. add organic matter back into the soil. You can see what look like crop circles down in front. Nope not .. those are hay pads left behind where we fed bales all last winter. Cows hang out there with the hay, mash it all up into the ground, do their business and now we've got organic matter On the right side, all lush and green we did that exact thing 2 years ago and mob grazed the cattle there last summer. Mob grazing .. we locate the cows with electric wire .. force them to eat everything off, not just the good stuff .. and move them off. This happens approx. every 2-3 days for us. At the back along the tree line is where we are mob grazing this year. Looks terrible .. for now. On the left side is a bit of field that grew exactly nothing. It was worked up last spring .. planted in grass with an oat cover and left alone all season. Come winter we put the cows there to clean up what was left of the oats .. but most went back into the soil .. organic matter In the second photo .. also dead ground. It was worked up last summer, the yearlings have been wintering there .. organic matter .. the part at the top has been planted back to grass already .. the bottom will be next year. One day .. we'll have a thriving pasture done right! Right by the soil, right by the plants and right by the cows

It's somebody's lucky day ... a side of beef has just come up for grabs Doesn't happen very often these days .. it's going in on Monday, my best guess is between 250-300 pounds. Cut and wrap is included of course. Will be ready beginning of July It even had those horns .. premium, grass only highland beef coming at ya

I just need to pop in and give you guys some These past few months have been .. interesting .. to say the least and in more ways than one Things in the meatshop have also been .. interesting ..... Normally in the spring its pretty quiet around here. We do a little bit of freezer fill in the bulk fashion and continue to sell steadily by the cuts. Our animals get out onto grass and live their best life for the summer. Fall time is generally our busy season when people go into hoarding mode for the coming winter .. thats me .. I do that So then .. this year .. .. no less than 8 sides of beef have flown out the door in the past 8 weeks .. the meatshop freezer has been sold out, restocked, and is pretty well empty again. I have orders for fall bulk beef, meanwhile the chickens, lambs and turkeys are selling before they even hit the freezer Wow guys .. just wow. So here I am continually humbled by your support of our little meatshop. You have trusted us to feed your family in some of the most bizzare times most of us have ever known and we are so greatful for that More beef is coming to the meatshop in the next couple of weeks and we will continue to bring more in throughout the summer. As for the rest of them, mid July, end of September, early October, mid November. So to you! Thank you is all Ive got but its so much more than that

Sometimes my food hoarding pays off .. just so happens my farmer and I have a special celebration today I did some digging and wouldnt you know it.. I found us some leg of lamb stashed *way* at the bottom to finish off our day Our lamb supply is pretty well finished off .. but weve secured a stash for fall If youre a lamb fan.. OK, so the farmer says I can't keep all the puppies .. so here they are. 2 female Kangal pups ready for their own herd to protect in a few weeks! Ash and Ember are working dogs on our farm. They keep our cows, birds and pigs safe from coyotes, foxes and wolves. They are invaluable members of our team and we can't say enough good things about them These girls will require a large acreage and job to do. They have been raised by our boys and will be an amazing addition to... their new families. If you want to know more, about the breed or the pups .. you know where to find me
