This month, Canada Post issued five stamps honouring six Canadian physicians and researchers whose discoveries have saved lives and revolutionized patient care around the world. Today, we are celebrating Dr. Bruce Chown. Dr. Bruce Chown devoted his career to understanding and preventing the root cause of Rhesus (Rh) disease. By the late 1960s, he developed a protein injection for mothers-to-be, virtually eliminating the disease, and saving the lives of countless babies. Dr. C...hown was a leader in child health research and instrumental in the establishment of the Childrens Hospital Foundation of Manitoba and our research institute. The Healthy Smile Happy Child team is currently conducting a randomized clinical trial (RCT) of sliver diamine fluoride (SDF) to arrest and manage early childhood caries in toddlers and preschool children. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, research coordinator Betty-Anne came to work most days to ensure that the RCT remained on track. She was busy contacting families, scheduling visits at our community-based dental clinic sites, completing questionnaires with parents over the phone and in clinic, securing needed PPE, and ensuring that no child in need of this SDF treatment missed their clinical visits or fell through the cracks.

Children's Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba 20.11.2019

Sarbjeet is one of our research staff and is involved in our current randomized clinical trial (RCT) of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) to arrest and manage early childhood caries in toddlers and preschool children. Bo Xiang is a true superhero because she has broken down every barrier put in her pathway to get the job done. Her diligence at work and patience as a teacher have been a great example to everyone that works with her. Bo Xiang has always gone the extra mile to support trainees in their studies and during the COVID-19 shutdown she has been exactly the same. During the time when access to the lab was restricted for students, she was able to perform experiments that wrapped studies up for trainees from a number of CHRIM labs. This work is essential to help trainees complete their degrees by preventing the loss of their experimental samples.

Children's Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba 05.10.2019

As a long distance marathon runner, Mario Fonseca knows that crossing the finish line is a combination of dedication, perseverance, and hard work preparing for the race. Mario uses the same ethos everyday in the lab preparing and then executing well-designed experimental studies. During the COVID-19 shutdown, Mario selflessly used his skills to write operating procedures to help CHRIM prepare for reopening. In addition, he came to CHRIM when access was restricted to most employees in order to make sure frozen cells and freezers were safe and ready for for us when we could resume our work.
