Reminder to employers from WorkSafeBC: the deferral period for Q1 and Q2 assessment premiums will end on October 20, 2020. Employers will have to pay their premiums for Q1, Q2, and Q3 in full by this date, and return to their regular reporting and payment schedule going forward. If you receive a CEWS subsidy, you do not have to include the wages of any furloughed workers (i.e., those on paid leave and not working) in your calculation of assessable payroll.... Today marks 1 year since Michael Weiler joined our Employment & Labour group at Kane Shannon Weiler LLP, one day after his birthday, and what a year this has been. Mike brings over 35 years of experience in the employment and labour field! He’s been a great mentor to me, and today seems like the perfect day to share the next Fireside Chat video from our series on a topic that is near and dear to Mike: Fireside Chat: Unions - What should businesses expect from Unions coming this fall?

Fireside Chat: Chris Drinovz and Mike Weiler of the Employment & Labour Law Group at Kane Shannon Weiler LLP discuss current developments for businesses in BC regarding layoffs, deemed terminations and BC Employment Standards Act variation applications.

Between July 20 and Aug. 30, the Employment Standards Branch approved 502 variance applications covering 9,154 workers with an average approval time of three days or less. This process will remain in place so employers and employees can apply to extend temporary layoffs where needed: https://news.gov.bc.ca/releases/2020LBR0030-001639 Important Note: temporary layoffs are not automatically extended - if you have employees who are still on them you need to apply for a variance ...otherwise your employees are deemed to be terminated and entitled to termination pay past the 24 week layoff period. Read more about the application process here: https://www.ksw.bc.ca/2020/07/21/variance-application/
