work in progress. I might get rid of teh fish hooks and take it back to a horizontal. At the moment, I'm liking some of the flat shapes and the roughness of the brushwork

I did not think I had time to respond to the TAS monthly challenge but this morning was encouraged by Jen's comments in that we should post even if it is a sketch. OK, I'm in. two stages of the sketch of the TAS February Art Challenge

Fish keep appearing ... this mean that the shapes are easy to find as I pick colours out from among the random textures that are randomly laid in. Originally intended the piece to be a nude; maybe this should be called 'Nudes in a pond'?

Here is a cropped segment of a piece I'm working on. I think the crop is the best part of the painting ... more fish... #christenesandesonart #wip #acrylicpainting #crop

The TAS inspiration photo caused me to reflect a bit more on the view out my window on a snowy day. This is a 20X20 acrylic painted very loosely but thickly. It is a follow up to the study posted last week. Very landscape-y and I will call it 'view of the old truro road from my studio window' .

This old easel was given to me over 40 years ago by an elderly artist. She was off-loading her belongings and I was starting to build mine. It has been a sturdy floor easel and I have used it (almost) daily since I received it. It has not occurred to me that I should upgrade or replace it. However I saw that Michaels had a 60% discount on their artist loft floor easels and I decided to take a chance. I bet you dollars to doughnuts it is not half the quality of this one but for the price it is worth having a second easel. Hugs to you old oak fellow. When I die someone else can have you. #christenesandesonart #tas #art2lifeacademy #inspired #materials.

Hey! Here is a #win. I had 2 pieces in the Teichert Gallery (at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia) and today I received a cheque. Both had sold. Win-win. That is so nice f.or Dragonfly City (31X30 acrylic on canvas) and Spring Time (20X30" acrylic on canvas)

Hi folks. Here is one result of the painting challenge that Debby and Andrea and I do together. I don' think it is finished yet, but I am using the Catalyst sil...icone blades to do these. Have to work quickly and going through a lot of paint. This painting is in response to the beautiful voice of Natalia Tsarikova, covering Sleeping Sun from Nightwish. Here she is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfzIDdHql1s See more

What studio improvements have you been working on?

Here is a Tidy Friday tip for those who work in acrylic media: I usually have 3 - 4 paintings in progress and tend to work with one or two colour mixtures at a time. You might try this method to keep colour mixtures moist for several days. (If you own a wet palette, you can skip to the next post.) From your collection of differently sized white plastic jar lids, select 3 different sizes. ... Squirt enough water into the largest lid so that the smallest lid can float inside of that. Leftover paint goes into this small lid as in photo #1. The mid-sized lid can then be capped over the small lid to create a water seal. This little paint sandwich can stay where it is, or be put into a plastic container alongside a wet kitchen sponge. If you have a lid that snaps over that, you can go to sleep knowing your colour mixture will be saved until the next day of painting. You can view more of my work on www.christenesandesonart.ca

Pink purple and teal were the challenge colours of the morning. Thank you to Debby and Andrea for your inspiration. the painting is a 12X12 acrylic on plywood

Can I call this a blue piece? This little 16X16 was finished yesterday and I realized this morning on my way to pound in a fence post that there is some blue in it. In fact, I will argue that the blue is punctuating the reds. Comments and criticisms always welcome

Hello artist friends... I try to post an art tip on the Truro Art Society page on Fridays. This Tidy Friday tip for brush maintenance came from one of my art students. Andrea repurposes cannelloni pasta trays to support her brushes while painting, as they are designed to channel elongated shapes and have a central ridge that can be used to tip the brush up or down. These plastic trays are also great to dry your brushes with tips resting down after being washed; I keep one relatively clean for that purpose. Additionally, a tiny rub of petroleum jelly into the dried bristle tips nicely re-shapes their edges and makes the brush easier to clean after use with acrylics.

here are two artist virtual play date pieces that I will just leave as-is. Comments welcome. They look how I usually start a painting but then I seek images within the shapes... so these are raw.

Steven Weatherby posted this on his facebook page "Reflections of Truro & Area - This week 30 years ago". Caption line is this: 30 Years ago this week, local artist Christene Sandeson was preparing for a solo art show at the A Gallery on Queen Street in Truro. PHOTO CREDIT: Stephen Weatherby. Steven I look at these photos from so long ago. I was a very busy person back then (and still now). This series of incised drawings featured images adapted from those provided by the Colchester Historical Museum. It wasn't exactly a lifetime ago but when I look at these photos I wonder who that young gal with the dark hair is

"Early Spring", 20 X 32", acrylic on canvas. This piece is still in progress but you can see the colour direction. I am also thinking of linear contrasts in the brushwork, such as clear-ragged, etc. I will post it once it is finished but first it needs to sit in my studio and talk to the other paintings for a while.

Hello Artist friends The cancellations of my teaching and other activities has been a welcome respite. I now have a better organized office space, a more streamlined gallery area, and a refreshed sitting space where studio visitors can have tea. This morning I re-organised the table that I use as my painting palette and finally the studio has come back to me. I now feel as though I had been doing too much outside of my art. When this virus settles down and life returns ...to a new normal, I would like to be less busy in the community. I am not sure what form that will take, but I think this will filter through my thinking over the next month or two as we settle more into social distancing. I feel as though life is fitting better, and I am not so rushed or require of myself to be so needed. It is good

Christenesandesonart 11.05.2020

During this period of social distancing my calendar has been rapidly cleared! Instead of painting, I have spent the past 10 days re-designing my workspace. Much is now complete, but I still have piles of stuff beside the piles of stuff . Can an idea like TidyFriday become a thing for me? Here is one major move that I completed this week: behold, the before (Gawd!) and after, a civilized sitting area:

Hello Artist friends. I am interested in building or buying a flat storage cabinet for my unframed works on paper and canvas. What do you call these pieces of furniture? (Not having much luck in finding what I know is out there.)

Christenesandesonart 05.05.2020

just for fun, here is a bit more progress on the larger of yesterday's pieces

Good morning! Bob are now home from a few weeks away. I have started a few new pieces inspired by crumbling surface structures and their 'starts' are here. I have an idea of where I"d like them to go, but these are the early stages.

Hello... I don't know if it is simply passing nostalgia or the onset of world political and climatical events that brings me back to this comfort style of painting. Here are "Cottage Chairs", acrylic on canvas, 21" X 16", available at the Marigold Centre January 10 - mid March of this year
