Note: as far as we know Health Canada's "1-meter buffer" rule is illegal all across Canada. No provincial jurisdiction is so reckless as to allow a helicopter t...o spray within 1 meter of fish bearing lakes, streams, and rivers (though they do allow spraying of many marshes, wetlands, and "temporary" creaks). This example below is just to show how trigger-happy Health Canada is with respect to herbicide use in our forests. If they think this is OK, what isn't? A few days ago we posted that Health Canada approves helicopter forest spraying within 1 meter of rivers, lakes and streams, and we stated we hoped we were wrong, as this basically means Health Canada is OK with watersheds getting sprayed (though we believe and hope provincial agencies don’t allow this by requiring larger buffers) Turns out Health Canada in fact does take this ridiculous position, which reflects a general recklessness evident in other careless positions on this topic (such as being OK with directly spraying small ephemeral forest wetlands). CN rail was criticized and we believe fined for spraying along the Skeena from the rail line. But it’s ok to cut a line 1 meter from a lake from 100 feet up? You bet guys. Even if this was entirely harmless, they are approving the permanent eradication of the broadleaf along streams lakes and ponds that would support beaver, fish, and countless other critters and in so doing will cause long-term loss of habitat and food, and ultimately their death. You don’t protect sensitive aquatic habitats by growing acidic, lifeless pine plantations right up to their edge, never mind risking overspray with a probable carcinogen and known fish and amphibian toxin. Here’s the clarification from Health Canada: Health Canada has concluded that it is acceptable to apply glyphosate in forestry using a helicopter, but a 1 metre (m) spray buffer zone is required to protect sensitive aquatic habitats. The forestry use does not allow for glyphosate to be applied directly to an aquatic habitat. With a 1 m spray buffer zone, in addition to the other requirements on the product label, the spray drift from helicopter application has been determined to be at an acceptable level so as to not adversely impact aquatic habitats when used at registered rates.

CL Stewardship Society will be doing a site visit at the restoration area in the Nature Park on Tuesday 10:30 am. They will discuss the purpose of the restoration and timelines. This will be a good opportunity to address any concerns or questions you have about the project.
