National Philanthropy Day Profile: In our sector, you can only hope to receive the type of call we did back in 2018 from then 8 year old Alleah. She wished to ask her family and friends for donations to the Christmas Bureau, in lieu of receiving presents for her 9th birthday. She let us know that her family looked at three different charities and they said they liked how we helped make the holidays happen for people who really need help the most. She raised $240 from her part...y, which provided a festive meal to 16 children in need. In 2019, she let us know she was doing it again for her 10th birthday! In addition, she planned a school-wide fundraiser, a loonie drive, and made her own collection jar - which we have proudly displayed in our office - raising a total of $500. We were so proud of her efforts, so we invited Alleah to share her story up on stage for our 79th annual campaign launch. She did such a wonderful job speaking in front of a few TV cameras and a couple hundred people. Knowing that there are incredible youth out there like Alleah with such kind-hearts in our community is so inspiring. Alleah, thank you for helping to bring joy into the homes of children and families in need. The National Philanthropy Day Luncheon traditionally would have been today. The format has changed this year- with a virtual approach- so we want to recognize our nominees, all who have been such an amazing support to us! Kevin Lowe has been a volunteer with the Christmas Bureau for over 30 years. His mother - Jessie Lowe who sadly passed away last year - was a volunteer with our charity long before Kevin joined us. She made such an impact to our work for many years and in th...e community as a whole. We understand that Jessie was so happy when Kevin identified that the Christmas Bureau was a cause he wished to make a commitment to as well. One of the many things that we appreciate about Kevin is that he always makes himself available for speaking engagements & events. He is the ideal ambassador in that he doesn't just show up to make an appearance, he actively participates and leads by example. Kevin would often bring his kids to Walk-In Days and he didn't sign up for the easy positions - they came to work. They would be on the clean-up shift doing tasks such as stacking chairs and sweeping floors. He wanted to show them that not every role is going to be glamorous but they are just as important. We are so grateful to Jessie, Kevin and the Lowe family for supporting our charity for well over 40 years, helping to bring joy into the homes of those in need Christmastime. #thankyou #gratitude #passtheplateyeg #make2020bright #yeg #yegcharity #donatetoday
