The changing roles of leaders in shaping organizational structure The 21st century heralded new sets of challenges for organizations (big and small) as well as organizational leaders. Here, while globalization and the rapid diffusion of information and communication technologies have transformed the economies of the Developed Countries (DCs), the Less Developed Countries (LDCs) of the world are, however, still trying to play catch-up albeit without much success. In his stu...dy, Agbim (2013) defined organization structure as a framework of roles, responsibilities, authority and communication relationships deliberately designed to accomplish an organization’s tasks and achieve its objectives. However, the work of Dess and Picken (2000) would seem to have upped the ante on Agbim’s work. Here, the authors opined that organizations and organizational leaders should change in tandem with developments in innovation, the effective utilization of knowledge, and the available human capital resources. Finally, it is pertinent to note that the traditional tools and techniques of management were specifically designed to ensure organizational stability, operational efficiency, and predictable performance. However, with the recent developments in technology, innovation, and communication, the traditional sets of tools and techniques would limit organizational flexibility, while simultaneously creating impediments to innovation, creativity, and change for many organizations. Therefore, organizations and organizational leaders must be ready to adopt the under listed strategies (alongside other relevant industry-specific initiatives) if they desire to succeed, to remain competitive, and to be relevant: 1.Adapt to the changing trends in the market. This is necessary to overcome the obstacles of the traditional tools and techniques of management listed above. Moreover, the ability to overcome such impediments would allow organizations and organizational leaders to meet the new and evolving global challenges. 2.Organizations and organizational leaders must adapt to their unique and specific ever-changing organizational requirements. The unique and specific requirements would most likely be driven by both internal and external factors. 3.Organizational leaders must learn to adopt strategies that stimulate innovation, creativity and responsiveness. 4.Leaders must also learn to manage continuous adaptation to change - without losing strategic focus. 5.Organizations and organizational leaders must invest in the development of skilled human capital resources References Agbim, K.
